Recommend me a corkscrew - Page 2

The standard waiter's style has a certain elegance and reliability, but it is not the most comfortable to use.

For comfort, you need Screwpull's fold-up one (with the one-ended handle, which turns very easily), or one of those lever guys that pulls a cork with two swift movements of the forearm.

And if the cork goes bad, a two-prong job for backup.

I disagree. Maybe it has to do with how a particular individual is used to opening bottles, but anyone should be able to use the standard double hinged corkscrew effectively.

Personally, I think it is the simplest, easiest, and most elegant way to open practically any bottle. When I look at some of these elaborate contraptions, I just get confused. During school, I worked as a waiter at a fine dining establishment, though, so that may have something to do with my preference.

There is nothing better than a personal connection.

An excellent corkscrew!

I echo many of the sentiments above about the Chateau Laguiole corkscrew. It is of a different quality than most other waiter's corkscrews. Just the heft of it makes it feel like a block of steel; it conveys a tactile, visceral pleasure. I recommend it highly. I cannot imagine it unable to remove a cork (I've never had trouble yet).

I use the Chateau Laguiole Oliver Poussier version regularly. I have also given Chateau Laguiole sommelier corkscrews as gifts. I gave one to a friend after he gave me a rabbit corkscrew (lever model). The rabbit is fun (especially to those who haven't seen one before), but doesn't work well at all with plastic corks, and after some time the novelty wears off. I came out on the short end of that exchange. I also gave a Chateau Laguiole sommelier corkscrew as a token gift for someone's wedding that I couldn't attend. It is a high quality gift.
