Mr. Chow's

I've heard lots about this restaurant from some friends and how its supposed to be where celebrities dine for a fortune. I've thought about taking a few people there just for the novelty of it to see what its like. Has anyone had any experiences there? If I went, I guess it would be more to see what a meal that expensive tastes like, but the people I'm thinking of taking would probably be more interested in seeing if there are any celebrities there.

It doesn't taste any better than food 1/4 of the price.
Only been to the one in LA; but, I liked Philippe in NYC better than Chow in LA.

Do they at least treat you better or something? Is there some novelty to the experience?

Not really.

The ones in NY are OK. Not great. Overpriced. Never a celebrity in the times I've been there. I've also never heard anyone here blow it up to be on that level either...

The actual Mr.Chow is the son of a very famous Beijing Opera singer, and he had a top-notch collection of Art Deco furniture. His wife was the late fashion icon, Tina Chow, who later died of AIDS, which she got from her French lover. That's all I know about Mr.Chow; I've never been to the restaurant.

ah so Tina Chow contracted AIDS from a lover...thanks for clearing that up, I was always under the assumption it was due to drug use. She was a stylish woman, I remember that GAP ad with her...

There is, or at least was, a Mr. Chow's in Kyoto right next to a very interesting cafe called Tinguely, featuring the kinetic sculpture of Jean Tinguely.

For those who haven't been inside the NY Mr. Chow's, there's a scene in the film Basquiat that takes place in the restaurant, with Michael Chow himself appearing as himself. I don't know if the restaurant's been renovated since then, but it confirmed some reports I heard about the restaurant being one where people hardly have any space to move about; all the tables are practically put right next to each other. There goes your privacy for a $1000 meal...

Completely overrated. Your better off going to Chinatown for a real deal meal.
