Shopping/Restuarant Recs for SF

Staying in the W hotel, south of market, is that close to the main shopping areas? What are some good restaurants in the area?

You are pretty close to Boulevard, which is an old staple of SF. Not the "hot" restaurant, but still fantastic. You should be able to get in no problem on a weeknight, but it will set you back $100 for a three course with a glass of wine (after tip). Whatever you do, stay away from One Market -- extremely overrated food and not a very creative menu IMO.

Actually I am going to be there Saturday/Sunday, staying over on Saturday night, so will that make it more difficult to get a table at the better restaurants? I can call ahead this week but not sure if everything is taken already.

If you're not into ambience, and enjoy traditional French bistro faire, I heartily recommend Bizou. Their lamb is excellent and the menu is well executed, albeit simple in its selection and creativity. If you decide to make the short walk to Market, Fifth Floor off 4th St. WAS a great place. The chef recently left, so there might have been a change in service/quality, etc. For a formal dining experience, I suggest taking a short cab ride or walking to Union Square and dining at Campton Place. Good food, great service, and quiet enough to carry a conversation at a reasonable volume.

Avoid Fiore de Italia, IMO. Famous, but wildly overrated. More of a tourist trap now, though I must give the place props for making a Supreme Court case out of the taxation of tips (really, look it up). Call ahead and book Boulevard. It's still the most "beloved" restaurant in the City. God I miss it. If it's nice, make sure to get to the Marina, which has the best views in the City IMO.

I did go ahead and book Boulevard, I will check out one of these other places for lunch.

Boulevard was top notch, just got back from a very enjoyable dinner. I started with a nice Pilsner Urquell (I love all things Czech, from beer to their cities to their women) We opened with a nice soup (butternut squash with carmelized pear and bacon) Our main courses were a duck breast and confit, and a rack of lamb. The duck was tender and tasty, with duck foie gras and squash mashed potatoes. The rack of lamb was flavored with mint and rosemary and was tender and tasty. I enjoyed a nice California cab as well. The dessert was probably the highlight of the evening though, I enjoyed the apple trio and my gf had the vanilla vanilla vanilla... apple was tart tartin with almost a carrot cake type topping, with a apple sherbert and a pasty encrusted carmelized apple. Vanilla vanilla vanilla had a creme brulee, a devil's food cake topped with vanilla pudding and a vanilla ice cream sandwich. I finished it off with a nice glass of Tokaji, and it was a spectacular meal. Damage was about $155 with tax and tip for the two of us.

sigh. i miss that place.
