Doing things alone

I personally can't stand people who can't stand being alone. To me, that shows some signs of insecurity and lack of personality and self-assurance. When I came to Hong Kong I spent the first 8 months doing stuff with people i just met, acquaintances and what not...and have now realized that I feel more at ease doing **** by myself and living life on my own terms. Not saying I don't enjoy some good company...but if you feel the need to always be around a group of people, especially when going out, I don't find that particularly admirable.

When travelling overseas I love going out at night by myself. Nowadays I spend most of my time by myself and I'm rarely bored.

I like alone time. Me time. It's great.

But I will NOT eat out by myself or go to a bar by myself (except McD's etc.). I feel horribly awkward. I have only ever gone to the movies by myself twice. In both cases I went on basically the last day the movie was showing, in the afternoon, out of desperation to see the movie and after eliminating every single friend or aquaintance who might go with me. I also much prefer traveling with someone to traveling alone. But that has more to do with bordom than anything.

But I shop alone most of the time. Clothes and groceries. In fact, I might just prefer it.

This is where I draw the line as well. I have no reservations going to a bar alone to watch a sporting event, and will be doing that next Thursday and Friday. But I find that it's awfully difficult to go alone to the type of places where you're supposed to meet people, unless you're naturally extroverted and can approach a group of strangers and strike up a conversation. I go to movies alone all the time. You're not talking during the movie, so what's the point of seeing it with someone? I don't eat out alone other than fast food. I get takeout.

That's funny, I had something similar happen to me. I was getting new glasses a while back and the gal doing the check ins for appointments swore I was from Australia. I grew up in Northern Indiana. I don't get it.

I have no reservations about going to a movie, bar, restaurant, or almost anywhere else, alone. But, I wouldn't go to a "club" alone.

I used to think the same way and for the most part still do, but if I truly want to see a movie that no one else wants to see, I'll go alone...and that's only happened twice.

I used to live right across the street from the AMC in downtown montreal and I would go all the time. I don't get the apparent shame some people have of seeing a film alone. You watch them alone at home all the time.

When I've travelled ( which I have extensively) I've always started out on my own, either picking up travel companions for short periods here and there or luxuriating in the experience of being entirely alone in a strange place with essentially unlimited possibilities.

In the city where I live, it's different. I live on my own and work for myself. I try to live a moderate and rewarding life and as such my interests are varied and I more often than not am drawn to do things that no one else I know does, so I end up spending time on my own, either out and about or indoors and occupied. I am single but far from a basket case and am perfectly happy because I do as I please.

Why? I prefer going to movies alone. I tend to get absorbed in them so it is better without anyone distracting me.

I've had friends comment that my habit of going to movies alone is really "sad'. Never understood that

I agree.

Movies and concerts - at least, the sort of concerts I attend - are much fulfilling when I
attend them on my own.

I think you need a girlfriend.

Just kidding. Doing things alone is one of the joys of life in the city. My wife doesn't share my lunacy when it comes to shopping, so that hunting is pursuit I enjoy on my own. Also, riding the subway with a book can be tremendously relaxing.

On the burgers, I don't think you can beat Burger Joint at one end and Corner Bistro on the other. For shakes, if you want to ride your bike somewhere far, go down to Bay Ridge. On 5th avenue between 85th and 86th (conveniently half a block from Century 21) is Hinch's Confectionary. Very old school New York, and they make pretty damn good shakes.

Yeah, other people tend to cramp my take no prisoners full store blitz shopping style. So that is better done alone as well

I travel maybe 140-150 days a year. some of it is with other people, but most o fit is alone. I am very comfortable with that.

I have no problem going to movie, bar, eating out, etc by myself. while I love doing things with my wife and kids, and with friends, I also need some time by myself, if I don't travel for a month for some reason, I get a little tense and need some time by myself.

With my job I meet and date some fantastic women, but having a full on partner or girlfriend really wouldn't fit into my pattern right now. Until I meet someone who totally knocks my socks off ( and I guess I'd know when that is because I wouldn't have to think about spending time with anyone else) I'm happy with things as they are.
