In honour of LD: Why do men let women decorate their house?

This is a serious question and is not just meant to bust his balls for having pink towels and a pink footstool in his bathroom.

I've seen lots of married guys' horribly decorated houses, and the culprit is usually their wife. The men have to live there too, so for me, it's beyond imaginable how they can leave all of these decisions to their wife. Often, they'll get the basement to do with as they wish, but for me, that just wouldn't cut it. If/when I buy a place with someone, there will be some serious negotiation on the issue of decorating style.

Discuss.

edit: Oh, and i thought I should point out that I'm not saying LD's place is horribly decorated. We only got a glimpse of the towels and nothing else.

Bring this back up again when you are either married or in a full-time relationship.

I recently ended one. And it was made clear to her during idle chat that if things ever got really serious, i'm decorating, or at least having an equal influence. I start preparing them for it early in the relationship.

Because most men "decorate" poorly, or not at all.

I think it often has to do with who gives more of a sh**t what color the towels or duvet covers are. Personally, there are certain areas of the house where I care about the decor/organization. The rest I don't, at least within reason.

I am not sure if it comes from China or Japan, but there is an old tradition that basically says that you should let the wife decorate the kitchen and bedroom any way she wants. The rest of the house is yours.

In reality I think decorations become a disaster when only one of the partners makes all the decisions. If both make the decisions together, there should be no problem in the end.

Regardless of whether women or men do it, most interior decor is tacky and horrible. Imagine either ruched, ruffled duvets with cheap animal print "accents" and "Baroque" furniture or really tawdry contemporary stuff like inferior quality laminate tables and ugly leather.

/agree

I am actually ready to redo my current place, but cannot justify it as most of the furniture is at most 2 years old and new-looking. It's certainly better looking than a lot of people's places, but next time I'm going the Nantucket route and having all the main pieces of furniture custom made. He really turned me on to the Japanese style and there's a guy in montreal that does a beautiful job. I'm gonna wait until I'm done moving for a while because it would be criminal to have stuff like that damaged in moves.

I'm also a little pissed that I paid 200 something per chair for the dining room table and some already have wobbly legs. I have 6 chairs and regularly sit in 1 of them.

So, all the married guys with horribly decorated houses are married to the same wife? Therein lies the problem.
