WTB: Need a stop-gap tux

I'm going to a wedding in Canada in a few weeks, and was hoping to avoid the hassle of packing my dinner jacket (I'm in England) by buying something RTW online and having it delivered to the States. I've poked around ebay, and came a hair's breadth away from snagging a Jil Sander tux last night, but sadly got pipped at the line. In an ideal world, I'd get my hands on a RLBL Classic tuxedo, 38R, and would manage to do so at a pretty good price. It seems dumb to spend $1300 on a dinner jacket I'll wear once and then leave at my parents' house in NY until the next North American wedding appears on the horizon. Any suggestions or offers would be welcome.

Seems like a waste of money to buy one when you already have one. Just take the extra luggage over.

Also, even if you get a tux now, you'll have to get it altered and turnaround time on that might be cutting it too close.

I agree with gumercindo, but if you insist.....you can usually get a basic DJ from Jos. a Banks for $200. it's not going to be cut like an RLBL, but it's cheap and it'll ship on time.

you could try shipping your dinner jacket and trousers to the states, and then shipping it back. although i would just back it in my carry-all bag and ship other generic clothes at my parent's place.

I keep 2 old suits, 6-10 old shirts, 6-10 pants and 3 shoes and belts at my parent's house in one of the old bedrooms - it saves me the hassle of having to take more than one bag when I go home - thus, if I need to bring something, I have plenty of space in one bag.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. The only reason I don't want to bring my DJ is that I hate putting it through the suitcase wringer. I'll have about a week after I get to Canada to get alterations done, so as long as I can get something to arrive within three weeks, fitting it won't be a problem. I think I'll just trowel ebay and such for the next couple of weeks and hope for the best. If nothing materializes I'll bite the bullet and bring the tux.

1. http://www.styleforum.net/showthread.php?t=59309

2. Check out "nitr-o" ebay store - he has Isaia tuxes for ~ $400-600.

3. Call the Polo outlets. I scored a RLPL dinner jacket+trousers for $600 in the Orlando outlet. They might have RLBL ones as well.

gumercindo, now that's some solid advice. Will an outlet store sell something over the phone and ship it? I just assumed you had to go to these places in person. Learn something new every day. Thanks!

No, I called them. They're very helpful and they'll ship it - all over the phone. In fact, I think I had called 2 other outlets before I finally came across one that had a tux in my size.

OK, had a really close call with one store, but they refused to ship what they had. I'm going to try again tomorrow and plead my case to a new set of ears. Did find out that the majority of stores are staffed by extremely nice people, though, most of whom are willing to ship. One of them even told me a story about a guy who bought an RLPL suit for 18 bucks. She said that he, and I quote, "almost had a coronary." And so we persevere...

Did they refuse to ship b/c you were in England? That might be a dealbreaker for shipping...

Here's hoping you luck out with a RLPL like I did!

Nope, refused to ship to NY. They said it was a factory store policy, which I've discovered is sort of true, but isn't without a considerable amount of wiggle room. A guy I spoke to said I could call Polo customer service and complain, but that seems a bit mean, so I'll try some sweet talkin' tomorrow.

I think that you'll find that a number of forum members live near the Polo outlets and if you found one that would work for you, someone here would likely pick it up and ship it to your NY address for a small fee
for the record, I don't live near one, but have offered to be a proxy for other similar situations
