Selling a car on eBay

For anyone who has sold a car on eBay, what was the experience like and how was it better or worse than the classifieds (hard print and online)?

I'm looking to unload the family Volvo XC90.

If my memory serves correctly, Ed (yeah, that Ed) sold a nonfunctioning '80s BMW for parts a while back, on eBay of course. I'd suggest emailing him.

It's a pain. I tried to sell my car. They charge for everything. It's not the easiest way to do things in my opinion. I didn't end up selling it but had a whole lot of jokers wanting to do trades with me (who just randomly trades cars) or calling after the auction ended and asking if I could drive the car 2 states out to them so they coulld inspect it. Coincidentally, I bought my car on ebay and would never recommend anyone buying a car on ebay.

i figured as much - by what method you end up selling your car?

I'm considering going the cars.com route since at most it costs $55 and a little upfront time to set-up.

I put cars (BMWs, mostly) for sale on eBay a while back on behalf of a dealer. We sold a couple, at way below market value. So, yeah, I think you can sell highline cars on eBay, but the money just isn't there.

I used a great method. It's called "Paying a lot to have your car shipped across the country and store it in your parents' garage so they have something to constantly complain about" method. I haven't even started it in a while and need to get a mechanic to take care of all that and then I'm thinking of listing with auto trader or one of those sites. But it might work for you since a lot of people buy and sell on there. I just don't recommend anyone to buy on there because the risk can be high and protection is minimal (their insurance thing is BS and I had to deal with a nightmare over it).

I bought a car on ebay, and it went awesomely. My roommate did the same thing, with similar results.

I probably wouldn't sell a car on ebay, as it seems that the prices are pretty low.

Is the trade in value that low? or are you not planning on buying a new one? You can usually make more selling privately than trading in, but sometimes the benefit of reduced tax when buying/leasing a new car can make it not worth the hassle.

Trade in quoted by 2 different dealers including Volvo were both 25% lower than KBB/Nada/comparable sales data I saw.

I've sold all my past automobiles on Craigslist and won't use anything else. It's free, get's the message out and it works!
