I Just Bought a... (Wine, Spirit, or Beer) - Page 78

Made my quarterly run. Unfortunately, I had to spend too much time in the wine department (man was I low), and had to restock standard mixers and such (1.75L Hendricks and Knob Creek, etc) so I had to go easy on new spirits acquisitions. The Tesseron actually came with the two Reidel glasses, wasn't that neat? The very sharp-eyed might realize that one of those bottles is far more than it really seems. Wine purchases were aimed at ready-to-drink as my last trip was aimed at laying down. As a wage-slave, we have to rotate these things. So, lots of easier or 2nd tier, if you will, wines -- Dolcettos, Aussie Shiraz/Cabs, NZ Chards and Sauvs, Vouvrays, some Gruners, Vacqueyras, CdR's, Cali Reislings, etc. Did grab a few bottles of better stuff, D'Arenberd 'The Dead Arm,' Ch. Mont-Redon, Ch. Vieux-Telegraph, and a few '05 Bordeaux just because. I stayed out of the vault and away from my precious Sauternes. ~ H

Good eyes! Yes, I am ever hunting 'dustys' -- there are so many gems to be found. That is my second bottle of old formula Campari. The first I found is a gift for the friend that introduced me to its hidden beauty, and I like to think the commitment to giving it away helped me find one for my own bar. Yeah, ama, that 21 was cracked before it hit the shelf. I last had it at a scotch bar called Downing Street in Houston a year and change ago. Instantly sold. Good stuff. ~ H

Look at this thing, its ridiculous. No idea why I just found it today, more than a decade too late.

The Springbank promises to be very good too, 11 years in Madeira, not just finished in it.

Been meaning to cross poast this:

****WARNING: JINDA BOMB ABOUT TO EXPLODE****

Just to set the mood:

Old Vine Zin field by Ridge Winery. Simply gorgeous views and I got some great shots. I'll poast more scenery stuff another day, as I just Jinda-bombed the crap out of this thread.

Some of these wines are pretty serious bottles, some just nice, "drink now" type stuff, and others just fun wines bought with certain people in mind. IMO, the standouts are the Switchback Ridge Cabs, the Garys' Pinot by Siduri, and the Torres Chards. Surprise of the lot is the Siduri Viognier. We loved it, which is a first for us with a single varietal of that. Cheesiest would be the chocolate flavoured dessert wine, Desiree. They were cheap and bought for gifts for a couple of wine hating chocolate lovers.

I may regret this, but I picked up a bottle of Highland Park 12. Wanted the 18, but that was out, so I settled for now.

Do let us know how you like it. I just finished a bottle of the 18, and while superb, I can't justify that sort of expenditure for a daily dram. Maybe if I were in New York, but certainly not in the Bay Area. At least, over here the 12 year runs about $34.

JUst picked up a half case of 2006 Cambria Julia's Pinot Noir. Yummy. My favorite $20 Pinot. It won't last long.

I like the 12, at least the bottling from several years ago. Highlanders are my thing, I think...have to try that Edradour.

Recent buys for me: Islay Mist blend (despite what was just said above), L'Abbe Francois Creme de Cassis (I NEEEED a hookup for Creme de Violet -- totally unavailable in Eastern Canada), and some white Burgundies/Bordeaux (Jaffelin Bourgogne Aligote and Chateau Tour de Mirambeau Reserve Entre Deux Mers)

The 18 is better, but you certainly won't regret getting the 12, its very nice in its own right.

Their regular 10 yo is nothing special, their exotic cask finishes on the other hand are stellar.

Normally I go for Macallan, but this is quite good. Warm, honey, sweet, clover, malt/peaty, long finish. Beautiful, the most startling transitions between flavors.
