Bangles - "Hazy Shade of Winter".

If their other stuff sounded like this, I might have taken them seriously.

I think I would take a lot of artists more seriously if their catalog was written for them exclusively by Paul Simon.

Although I like that song, it's nothing compared to Dynamite Hack's version of Boyz N Tha Hood. EDIT bonus, a bluegrass cover of Peter, Bjorn and John's "Young Folks" : http://youtube.com/watch?v=Uh_8j8k39y0

Not that this should count, but late last year I saw Kansas cover "Eleanor Rigby "and they gave it a red-blooded full band treatment. I was quite impressed, but it could have also been the bourbon we were drinking, and the gent who was lighting up right behind us.

+1. Really liked the song. The soundtrack from Less than Zero had a few covers, Aerosmith doing "Rockin' Pneumonia and the Boogie Woogie Flu"; LL Cool J's version of Going to California. Some of my favorite covers is Living Colour's version of Hendrix's "Buring of the Midnight Lamp" and Hendrix's cover of "Along the Watchtower" by Dylan; Isley Bros. cover of "Summer Breeze"; Jeff Buckley doing "Hallelujah" by Cohen (previously mentioned).

Haven't heard that one, but love the Social Distortion cover of the old Johnny Cash classic.

Also fond of many covers by The Wedding Present, especially Neil Young's Don't Cry No Tears and Isaac Hayes' Theme From Shaft!

First of all, thank God this thread hasn't turned into a chorus of "any Dylan cover" and any Stevie Ray Vaughn cover of Hendrix," because those are the two most ridiculous things anybody could say in a discussion like this. I like covers that are really new and cool interpretations of old songs. Some that come to mind are: Much of the early Led Zeppelin songbook, incuding Lemon Song, Dazed and Confused, Bring it on Home, etc, etc. They get points deducted for not crediting the original songwriters, but these are some of the best covers of all time. Satisfaction - Devo All Tomorrow's Parties - Japan Bob Dylan - House of the Rising Sun (on his first album - amazing vocal performance) Aerosmith - Train Kept a Rollin' (second LD on this one) X - Soul Kitchen Minutemen - Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love Al Green - For the Good Times MIA - Bamboo Banga (Current fave, maybe not a real cover but starts out as a cover or Roadrunner by the Modern Lovers. MIA kills it.)

"Just My Imagination" by the Stones. The Temptations' version is sweet, but the slight edge the Stones give it is awesome.

Ry Cooder, "Denomination Blues"

Nicolette Larson's cover of Lotta Love by Neil Young is beautiful. Interestingly enough, she was one of Neil's primary backup singers and absolutely killed it on Motorcycle Mama. I think she passed away in the late 1990's
