Holy crap have I been neglecting cardio

I just started cutting yesterday, and I switched over to a pretty brutal circuit (clean and jerk x 8, 30 seconds box jumps, run stairs, 30 seconds side to side bench plyos, bear crawl weight push, rest x 3) instead of my normal lifting routine. I quit kickboxing a while ago because I didn't have the time to get in, so I hadn't really done any cardio for a few months. My heart rate was 186-204 just about the whole time- I wasn't really breathing hard, just my heart felt like it was going to jump out of my chest. Don't neglect your cardio, folks, or this could happen to you.

Don't start off with such a brutal circuit. I see this time and time again from my friends who try to get into a cardio program. They beat the hell out of themselves after not doing anything for months, then they get sore or hurt and quit again. It's just not advisable to start with such a rough workout. Start easy. You don't need to impress anyone (yet).

Sage advice here.

I'm hardly sore, just my shoulders from the C&J. I don't think it's jumping in too deep at all, I'll try it again today and see if my HR is lower. If I break something, I'll buy you a coke. You know, doctors are always the worst patients.

I find that circuits and complexes always get my heart going a lot harder and faster than "normal" cardio. I actually wouldn't back off if I were you. You made it through the circuit, so if you're recovering well enough, then keep at it. Just sleep enough. You know you're a lifter when... clean and jerks are part of your "cardio" routine. Heh. Hats off to you for that.

That heart rate is extremely high, in fact it's your max heart rate at that age (assuming you're in your 20s). I'd just do cardio in the 130-150 range for a couple weeks and ramp up from there.

That's kind of the point.

No kidding. That's why I do it.

I've toyed with the idea of doing circuits while cutting, but I'm always so afraid that if I back off the heavy lifting, I'll drop muscle more quickly. Is this fear unfounded? I'm starting to cut, too, but I just switched to a heavy superset-based routine three days a week and HIIT three more.

Basically, with my body, I'd rather lose weight more slowly (I have no problem dropping weight at all) but maintain more of my hard-earned muscle.

There's no real need to back off heavy lifting to do them. Just base them around a heavy big lift and throw in extra crap between them. You can also just throw them in once or twice a week and keep normal lifting days. Or just replace a cardio day with tabata.

I started jump roping, after about 2 minutes I was spent. My goal is to be able to do it for an hour straight and get all fancy with it.

I guess, but it's sometimes hard enough to do sprint intervals the day after squatting (which is, well, every day I do cardio). Clean & jerks after having done military presses, squats, deadlifts, etc the day before sounds like I'm in danger of overworking.

Mostly I was wondering about Eason mentioning that he switched to a circuit "instead of" his normal lifting routine.

Sprinting + tempo is better

well if you structure it like

monday: full body lifting - heavy
tuesday: cardio intervals
wed: full body lifting - circuit based
thurs: off
friday: full body lifting - heavier (lower body pulling only)
saturday: tabata (front squats)
sunday: off

I don't think you should be in any real danger of overtraining.
