Why does whisky + balcony make people think they can fly? - Page 2

I was at a very large bonfire, a pile of branches and such about 12 feet long, 7 feet wide, and 6 feet tall out in a rural area with a few friends in his backyard, and I was drinking Whiskey and coke, and I had the strongest urge to jump in this massive fire.

Maybe it's whisky + carbonated mixer + dangerous situation.

I think it is cheap whiskey in general that causes thoughts of death.

Whenever i'm on a high roof or this cliff at a local rock quarry, i always keep thinking about jumping. What it would be like, how i would feel in the air, landing, and other stuff. Kinda creepy so i try to stay away from ledges.

A friend of mine (who is much older than me - a 50 year old exec at our pharmaceutical company) confessed to something similar when we were carpooling recently. He said that such thoughts always go through his head whenever he's in hotel rooms or restaurants on high floors. He thinks "should I jump?" "what would happen if I jumped?"

This was the first I'd heard of this phenomenon and I thought it was pretty bizzare but I guess it's not such an uncommon inclination?

I can't see what sort of evolutionary advantage such an instict would confer...
