Years ago, I'd spend 30 minutes trudging across town to go to some famed happy hour place. It would enivtably be packed with people I didn't care to hang-out with and then I'd have to take a cab home, pretty much negating any amount of money I just saved. Just find a few good places near your home or office and chances are they'll have a happy hour special. (see Jodum5's post)
