Tipping is the privilege of an effectively self-regulating population of restaurant patrons.

If we did not make a custom of tipping servers, restaurants would have to pay them higher wages--this would either increase the cost of food on the menu, or (more likely) induce a service charge. It's only because Americans are pretty accurate tippers that we get to tip instead of being forced to pay a pre-set amount (which, in turn, lowers your server's incentive to do his job well).

Tip appropriately, or you'll f*ck up this sweet deal for the rest of us.

I do not mind tipping 20% for outstanding service where I feel it. Sadly I rarely feel it even at the top NYC places. I tip anyhow because when I come back they remember and it has its perks.

That's not always true, Europe has managed to keep the cost of dining out reasonable and they don't rush you out the door in 30 minutes. Again, when service is superior I tip accordingly (well above 15%) because it's is just so freaking rare.

You guys should move to Australia. Waiters get paid $15 an hour (one of my friends gets paid $20 and he's only a junior), the service isn't bad, and if waiters give bad service, we have a good ol' fashioned idea called "fire incompetant staff".

it is easy to debate the theoretical issues with tipping, the compensation structure in american restaurants etc. however the waiters & bartenders that serve me depend on my tips to survive and i will gladly support them for a job well done and i also tip better at my 'regular' spots (and am taken care of better because of this). perhaps i am biased because i was a waiter throughout highschool & most of college. if someone can't handle this they should stay home and cook for themselves.

For many erotic services, tipping is not obligatory so I usually bring gifts.

Assuming the job is actually "well done". A lot of waiters do nothing more than the minimal (take order, give food), and very few actually go out of their way to make dining a pleasant experience.

The fact is, restaurants still charge a big premium - part of that $50 bill goes into the waiter's standard service. Good tips are really only for waiters who actually go beyond the McDonalds routine. Otherwise, there's no difference between that restaurant and McDonalds.
