Toner?

Skin toners have come up in several recent threads on shaving and on the care of facial skin. Do toners have any purpose other than closing pores? If not, won't a splash of cold water perform the same function?

Along the same lines, is the reason for closing one's pores after shaving to decrease the likelihood of clogging them with moisturizer?

And finally, does shaving with an electric shaver open one's pores, or does that only happen with a blade and hot water?

I read somewhere on Menessentials that toner removes the excess particles that a scrub works loose. I'd assume it would also remove bits of hair and gel left from shaving.

Some skincare people claim that toner is a remnant from times when cleanser was much guckier and you needed more than water to get it off your skin afterwards. Personally, I'd say toner works for some people and not for others: rather than following the blanket recommendations often given here, you need to experiment on your own skin.

the true purpose of toner is to restore the pH level of your skin post any exfoliation, such as shaving, so that any moisturizer or aftershave lotion can be properly absorbed

they can also be used post shaving to remove any excess residue

I'll use a face wash then wipe with a cotton pad soaked in toner. The pad will often come up dark. I figure it must be getting something dirty off my face and that's good. My skin also feels cleaner and tighter afterwards.

I've been using the Clinique line. Not very expensive and works well for me.

There is a Neutrogena "Pore Refining Toner" that I swear by. Every evening after washing my face I use it and it feels great. Soap doesn't get all the oils off your face.
