Fake Ferrari ring busted

http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/worl...-Ferraris.html

And I Googled it further and found this:

http://carbl.com/2007/10/08/fake-ferrari.html

I can't tell the difference from the picture.

That F355 replica looked pretty decent, however most of the copies look fairly obvious due to the shorter wheelbases of the Fiero's and MR2's.

Interesting...I've never seen a fake Ferrari. These look a bit obvious.

The interiors always look like crap too. As if the 0-60 in 8 seconds didn't clue you in.

True,

If your Ferrari is missing 4 cylinders, you may need to be a little suspicious.

why fake a ferrari? I'm sure any serious buyer would do a little due dilligence.

It surprises me more where the fake Ferrari is coming from - Italy. If you had told me China I wouldn't be surprised. I'm more surprised that they could build that car in Italy and not be discovered quickly and that they could do it for that low of a price. I bought a Ferrari from friends that needed the cash after the bubble imploded and had to part with toys. I quickly learned that any discount Ferrari part was a fake. There is just too much profit not to attempt to copy the parts and sell them. I'm not supporting theft and copying, I make my living in the tech world and as a lawyer I have to have that opinion but I understand that the laws of economics haven't been repealed - supply is only attempting to meet demand.

The buyers know it's fake, obviously.

I wouldn't be surprised if a couple of buyers were some of those clueless rich guys with money thinking they got a phat car for a steal

According to the article, buyers knew they are fact and were (speculation) just buying to impress people.

On a related note, National Geographic channel showed a great episode of Super Factories (I think that was the name) last night featuring the Ferrari factory. Very interesting watching them build the car from the ground up.

You can make any number of exotics on the Fiero platform, including Lambos, F40s and more. Sometimes they even stretch the frame 12" to address the wheelbase issue and make it look more convincing. These are probably more common than you think. I was at a car show where there was a kit Ferrari replica, replete with FAUXRARI vanity plates. I could never work out why someone would want one.

Wow. That must take a ridiculous amount of time. I'm sure the average person who has probably never seen a ferrari up close would not recognize the differences. Even if they thought something was off, who would think "it must be a knock-off?" They'd probably just assume this model is different.

Of course crappy performance would clue people in, but I'm sure the owner would just say they're obeying all the speed limits. If you're just cruising in regular traffic, no one can really tell how fast your car is.

Apparently this guy had one, he seemed to be pretty satisfied with it so much that he didn't want to get rid of it.
