A cape looks great with a white tie and a top hat. A friend of mine once wore those to an academic ball and it looked great, but I haven't been able to justify the expense since there are only 1-2 events yearly where I could do that.

To answer the original question, I've always liked frock coats. Maybe some day..

1. All white like Tony Leung in "The Lover" set in the 1920's

2. Dirty boots and hat ala spaghetti westerns.

3. Leather pants and chelsea boots for my inner rockstar.

4. Round specs like Le Corbusier

Count me among the frock-coat fans. Also, I've been watching the Avengers lately, and I have to say that John Steed is pretty stylin'. If only I could pull off some of those outfits...

And I wouldn't mind trying on a pair of tweed plus-fours!

I have a frock coat in a 38 portly. Maybe you all can arrange a timeshare.

I'd wear an Arab outfit if I could with the requisite vintage '60s Mercedes coupe.

+1 on that.

but "if I could get away with it" I'd wear a handgun on me at most times.

Nice thread -

There are lots of costume items I'd love to be able to wear on a day-to-day basis. Well maybe not quite day-to day...

1) Full blown Napoleonic-era military uniform. Something like the British Rifle "greenjacket" uniform or maybe the French Chasseurs, complete with pelisse.

2) Cavalier oufit, with hat and rapier! Love all the frills.

3) Cape, definitely second/third this suggestion. How cool would it be walking down the street, cape swirling around you.

Seriously odd choices I know!

At times I've also thought about a modern twist on a frock coat. I think it could be pulled off - just above knee length, very flared skirt, lots of waist suppression, hacking pockets, peak lapels, probably either single button or maybe 2 button. In black, indigo or even a forest green. Complete the look with dark trousers and black shoes or white breeches/black riding boots, white rose boutonniere (or maybe an orchid?) and a white ruffled shirt. Either no tie or a white cravat.

Insane? Yeah, probably! But worth a second look, I think you'd agree!

A fedora or a bowler. When exactly did the hat-making lobby die? I've heard JFK was responsible.

The full Steed.
