Sneak food into movie theatre? - Page 5

I have a few times, but not because I am mad about the prices of food - I pay them.

I have brought in a few coke bottles, but I never "sneak" it. The few times I have gotten in with them is just b/c I forget I have it in my hand and noone says anything to me... if they said something, I would have been glad to trash it. I feel bad sometimes when I end up with food in there.

whats the definition of food?
gum?
tic-tacs?
altoids?

My father owned the Visulite Theatre in Charlotte, NC when I was growing up. My grandfather purchased the business back in the 1950's I believe. I started popping the popcorn there for $1.00/hour when I was 10 years old (~1971). By the time I entered my late teens, it became impossible for the small businessman to suvive in the movie business even with overpriced popcorn and drinks. I remember when Tommie played first run at my dad's theatre; there were lines around the theatre for weeks. Dad still lost money on it. That was the last of the big films he was even able to acquire. I think the place is a night club now.

Thats really a sad story. It's always been sort of a dream of mine to open a small theater and play weird but subtly thematically interconnected double features.

At least you can rest assured that the only ones making a profit these days is the distributors.

Speaking of which, New Line Cinema was just absorbed by Warner today. Sad.

maybe movie theatres will go non-profit like opera.

Does that mean we will have to pay over $100.00 for a decent seat?

It means we'll be able to wear tuxedos to "Harold & Kumar Go to WhiteCastle: Part 2"

I did it once. Went to some Noodle chain restaurant with my sister. Didn't have time to even start eating before the movie began so we stuffed the food (in its container) it her bag and went to the movie. Yes, I was that dude with the funky smelly food in the place. It was good though. But my only time doing so.

It is not my problem that theatre owners aren't better negotiators against the studios and I shouldn't have to pay for it with high-priced food.

I worked in a theatre for a year and some change back in highschool, and you're dead on with the profit part. They mark that stuff up like crazy, so yes, I sneak a ton of stuff in, as much as it's "sneaking" with friends who work there turning a blind eye

See... you only worked there for a year in HS. I managed a theater. I went to the bidding meetings. I filed the monthly books. I counted the safe. I sat in on NATO conferences. I was in charge of maintenance. I don't know who perpetrates this idea that movie theaters are raking in money hand over fist on concession sales. It just isn't the case. When your buddies turn a blind eye to you sneaking food in, they are taking money out of their own pocket. All the operating costs for the major chains come out of concession sales. If they ever complain that their pay sucks, and that they aren't getting good raises. Maybe bring that up to them. I'm not trying to make anyone feel guilty or anything. The theaters did it to themselves, but to claim that you are sneaking food in because the prices are so high, helps nobody but yourself. I guess its just the way of the world, right? And then one day the theater closes. And you'll wonder why. Well... they can't afford to staff anyone, pay their exorbitant lease, bid for movies, or pay their extraordinarily high electric bill.

I like to sneak beer into the theatre. My wife is a popcorn addict and prefers making her own so she usually sneaks a bagfull in a large purse and I make her smuggle a tall can of beer in there too. If I haven't had dinner, I may also bring some sushi to the movies. Grapes are nice for dessert too.
