does anyone know of an inexpensive drawing program (not illustrator) that would be adequate for making cartoons/comic strips?

thank you very much for this. i'm using scribbles and artrage and they work well. the only disappointment is that neither has a 'paint bucket' feature.

Corel Painter is very fun to use and play around in if you have a pen tablet.

Have you actually tried to use GIMP or any of its ports? That's like telling someone that swimming is very fun if they wear a lead apron.

Hey, you get what you pay for. I use GIMP all the time as I use Linux mostly at work. I think it has come a long way and you can do some great things. The interfaces on OSS sometimes are a little weird. I have friends that can do some pretty cool 3d modeling with Blender too.

Omnigraffle might work but it isn't cheap.

Have you tried inkscape? There seems to be a mac version of it, so it's probably worth a try.

I would suggest that the experience, especially from a Mac user perspective with experience with Photoshop, can be enhanced and simplified by using the GimpShop mod.

This, of course has one caveat: Gimpshop isn't compatible, as far as I know with Leopard.

Drawing will still be easier within Artrage, but colouring in the line art would be a definitely enhanced with Gimp.

You could always get BootCamp / Fusion / Parallels and run windows-based drawing programs.

He's new to Macs Ann old thread, but missed it first time round... Re - GIMP ports - Seashore is ok and runs native on Mac. Worth playing with. Re - drawing apps - Open Office 3 is a few months away, but will run native on Mac and includes the rudimentary-but-functional app Draw. Ive played with it on Linux, did what I needed it to.
