Bikkembergs - Good Brand?

Tried on a charcoal denim fitted shirt (slight military references) by Bikkembergs at a local Winners yesterday (think Marshalls if you are in the US).

It's reduced to $50, and the "Compare At" price is $240. This is the first time I've seen this brand/designer and it was the only one like it in the store. I liked the fit, but left it behind...

I'm thinking about going back to get it. Any input on this label? Thanks.

I believe most of the label is regarded as tasteless eurotrash.

Dirk Bikkembergs is one of the original Antwerp Six, which includes Ann Demeulemeester and Dries van Noten. He went in a different direction in the early 00's, however, and instead of going along with everyone else doing avant garde, very... black, stuff, he decided to do a lot of sports influenced clothing (a lot of it soccer inspired.) He is hugely popular in Italy, but for some reason, his stuff just hasn't translated to popularity in the US or Canada. The only non discount stockist I know of is Politix in LA, which carries a lot of his wierd ass sneakers. Not really my deal, but I can appreciate it.

The list price is probably reasonably accurate.

Yes, I remember Dirk Bikkembergs and have bought a pair of boots from him at Maxfield in the late 90s. I haven't seen his labels around lately, but I'm glad he's still around. They were underground at the time together with Franco Moschino and Armand Basi.

Bikkembergs does wonderful knits and sharp suits, but only under the black label, at least the last time I looked. The white label is acceptable enough if you like heavy branding but the quality is really not that great for the price point. Anything from the sports label is really just eurotrash. Its too bad because he did such wonderful collections in the mid-90's and got caught up in cashing- in on the branding frenzy of the late 90's. All the shops (including the one where I used to work) that used to buy his line in Berlin stopped ordering about 4 seasons ago.

Much of the "sports-inspired" stuff is pretty gaudy and heavily branded as others have said, but the knitwear (Maglia is the main line) is really very tastefully done, and well at that. However, the list price on that item probably gives you a hint as to how pricy a lot of their stuff is. Not that it's probably an issue but... Do not buy their sunglasses. Luxottica group garbage.

I wouldn't agree with that. It's definitely more sports-oriented, so it's really like comparing apples and oranges. Can't really compare Bikkembergs with say Dries Van Noten... The "branding" is more in the vein of what Adidas or Puma do with their sportswear, rather than the tasteless A/X. I have a very soft, melange wool zip-up that I like and my wife has a few of their other more toned-down pieces for casual wear. Some of the clothes have some well-thought out features, and I like the quality of the wool and materials of the pieces that we have. Very fine cotton, wool, etc. I would pick-up the shirt if you like it.

I'd also throw in a vote for their sneakers, too, if you like the football (that's soccer for you Americans ) references...

I love the sporty fun of his sneakers. They're actually my favorite shoes to do sprints in, too.

The silhouette on the sneakers is very nice -- much better than most of the bricks that come from American designers.

+1

I love how lean his shoes are... A nice mixture of classic football boot with modern styling. Do you remember which football team he designed the uniforms for? Was it Barcelona? I know he owns a small Italian football club, but I know there was another European premier league club in the picture...

When I first went to Milan 4 years ago loads of people were wearing these shoes that I had no idea what they were but liked them, I soon found out they were Bikkembergs, they were worn with smart jeans often but all sorts of combos, they were still being worn when I was last there in January but I think the popularity is dying a bit, I like the shoes but don't like the clothing. Am suprised that nobody wearing the shoes has popped up on the Sartorialist yet.
