The Warriors. The Conformist.
It occurred to me that there are also some movies that are anti-style. They make arguments against style, not explicitly, but by making heroes of characters so blatantly indifferent to style that it's apparent that they view style as a straitjacket or as an announcement that the system owns you. The characters get by on inate cool of one form or another.
These are good movies, or they wouldn't be worth talking about. Some examples, off the top of my head: The Wages of Fear, Rancho Deluxe (THE anti-style film), Singles, California Split and Choose Me (which is in fact very stylishly made although the characters are stylish not at all).
The first two pics are from The Conformist. The third is Elliott Gould very near the end of California Split.
