Glasses: frames, sunglasses, prescription, etc

Thread Starter
I've worn glasses all my life but just in the last few days 'really' started thinking about it.

Can I buy a set of sunglasses, like Ray Ban Wayfarers, without lenses, and then have prescription sunglass lenses put in?

Can you buy frames on ebay and have lenses (prescription sunglasses or clear) put in them?

Yes you can, as long as their lenses arent too curved. Thats what the people ive went to have told me.

Thanks. I was going to start a thread to ask the same question.

Old pic recycled (sorry, I take pics that can do double or triple duty The 'Clubmaster' in the photo started out as prescription glasses. Now prescription sunglasses with new lenses.

I've been putting prescription lenses in my sunglasses for years now. I've done at least a dozen pairs in almost any style. As mentioned, the only limiting factor is with very curved lenses, as with wrap-arounds. Wayfarers or aviators or most commons styles are easy to do.

i just had a set of wayfarers set up for prescription lenses

its a bizarre feeling to put on sunglasses and being able to actually see through them

You can keep the glasses; I'll take the Royal Oak.

This might be a stupid question: But the basic process is, I can buy a nice pair of glasses that suits my face, and can get prescription lenses installed in the frame? Do most optical places accept frames not ordered from their store?

I think they all do - at least the ones I've been to. They make money on the lenses as well as the frames.

I do it all the time... Vintage frames have so much more character.

Check out some Old Puccis on Ebay. Of if you can find them, leather wrapped aviators.

Jon.

Thanks. Get one for yourself. I predict this model will be supplanted by the newer one (with seconds hand) soon.

I posted the pic of the 'Clubmaster' above. Iv'e never seen one in public. You can't find them in the shops. They are pictured in a small brochure that comes with Rayban sunglasses. Why aren't they more common? Are they too Buddy Holly/'Falling Down'/Kevin Costner-in-'JFK-ish'? Are they the glasses equivalent of blocked hats or ascots? Discuss.

feynmix, I would be cautious about this. If you have a regular optician I suggest you ask about this. I know at a place like Lenscrafters they won't put prescription lenses in all of the frames they sell. When I asked they said it had something to do with the curvature of the frame. Maybe a private optician would be more flexible on this. I know I wouldn't want to drop a lot of money on some frames only to find out I can't have a prescription put in them.

I am going to try and find out. One more question: When I buy an expensive frame, obviously the frame itself is what's worth the cost. Are the lenses given with those frames not worth a good percentage of the price?
