Way late here but I grew up with cooks, maids, drivers, "gatemen" and stewards while growing up. Between the ages of 5-12 while growing up in Nigeria we had all the above. However, those are pretty normal for people in the middle class (not all at once but maybe one or two at any given time). However, even though we had those (and even though I was a hell of a brat as a kid) I still grew up knowing how to dust, vacuum, cook/bake (I liked hanging out in the kitchen), hand wash clothes (i despise this though), etc. I think it was mostly due to some circumstances when we would be "inbetween help" and we would have to clean up after ourselves for a few weeks. Other times it may have been because someone was on vacation or ill and we were taking the load off him/her.

However though, I was an asshole of a kid to some of them.

My family also had a maid growing up but I never saw her. I only knew she existed because my mother would say, seemingly every day, something along the lines of:

"Hang up your coat, it's the maids day off".

I really don't know why she kept her.

I occasionally google keywords to see what is out there and this site came up.
I am a big fan of publicising Butlers and answering questions from curious people. Most of the people i meet have never met another Butler.

Are there Butler schools? How does one know that they are hiring a qualified individual? Also, how much can one expect to pay a Butler?

Membership in the IIMB, while not mandatory, may be a helpful credential.

"Professional butlers typically earn $50,000 to $100,000 or more per year, plus health insurance, room and board, and use of a luxury car"

I have heard the number is closer to $100K for the truly serious that wants to have a lasting relationship with a consummate professional, though location and demand will be a factor.

I would think in the rarefied world of households requiring a butler, shopping on price is not the best approach.
