Interest check: Gaultier "Chasidic Collection" F/W '93 gray coat sz 42

One from the archives....a gray wool coat from Jean Paul Gaultier's F/W 1993 collection, inspired by the dress of orthodox Jews. A French Vogue photo shoot in Borough Park gave the frummies fits, as the models were dressed in the clothing of men. And they were models. This coat is from the men's line. In this piece, the connection to the Chasids is more tangential....I don't know of any whose coats have kimono sleeves, for example. Other style notes here include a dropped shoulder, an unconstructed chest and shoulder (no padding) and no buttons at chest or sleeve. The capacious patch pockets suggest this coat should be worn casually. There is a locker loop in the back, however, for when you wear it to the gym. The coat is all wool, and unfortunately some moth, either an enemy of or defender of the faith ( you choose) made a meal of a square centimeter or two by the right shoulder seam. Perhaps you can cover this up with a button or a bit of ribbon. When decinding how to wear this piece, I think you have a fair amount of lattitude. The size on the label is 42, but may fit larger...or smaller...again depending on how you wear it. The label, with the designer's name in Hebrew letters, is a conversation piece in itself. Wrinkles are because I just took it out of the storage box. Anybody interested?

How much? I would absolutely love that and it would make for interesting conversation at synagogue deep in the heart of Texas (but I'm in NY now and was just in Riverdale today among the frummies).

Other than the lettering (which is in Hebrew Letters) exactly what about this is "Chasidic or "Frummie") in nature? The man pictured on the label isnt even Hassidic looking at all. Also as an aside, merely being Jewish doesn't quite give you the right to denigrate others of the Jewish faith which in my eyes (and I am sure other users of the word) the use of the word "frummie" here connotes.

As I said, the collections that season were 'inspired' by Chasidic styles of dress. The reaction to the first runway show is here. Not sure if it is men's and women's, or just the latter. http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpag...50C0A965958260 One other men's piece I recall seeing was a deconstructed version of the frock coat commonly worn by Satmar Chasidism in my area of Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Other pieces, like the one pictured, carried this inspiration farther afield, but are part of the same collection. As for the term 'frummie,' I understood it to be a very mild term often used by frum [very observant] Jews themselves, as here: http://notsofrummie.blogspot.com/ Sorry to cause any offense.
