Unexplained computer freezing/crashing

Thread Starter
I have a new HP Pavillion dv9000 laptop (running Vista). It runs really well except for one weird flaw, which would only happen once a month, and is now happening every few days.

You're working normally and then for a few seconds the mouse seems to be paralyzed, then all of a sudden the screen turns white with all these little dashes and I have to restart. What causes this and how can I fix it? It would really annoying to return it and get a new laptop, but is that my only option? Also, if I did get a new one, how would I know this wouldn't happen again?

My first thought is that it reads like a video card problem - try to update your drivers if you know how to see if it helps, otherwise take it back for a replacement or to get it fixed.

I agree. Also try turning down hardware acceleration and see if that fixes the problem. If so, you need a new video card.

Ctrl Panel - Display - Settings tab - Advanced - Troubleshoot tab - turn it down, may need to restart. I had exactly this type of thing come up on a client's PC a bit ago and that was the fix. She was able to work with it on "no accel" to get by for a while whilst we procured the replacement card.

Yep, sounds like a video card problem. Check in Vista's performance rating to see what your ratings are. A laptop and Vista just don't mix right now.

At first thought after reading the first two sentences and thread title, I thought it was an overhearting problem.

If it's new, I would just try updating all the drivers I can. Otherwise I'd send it back.

I know this is very late, but it could also be a motherboard problem or a latency issue
