How do you keep motivated to go to the gym? - Page 3

also, i don't really get what light weights do for anybody, except maybe get your heart rate up a little bit....? It's like when girls lift little weights 'cause they think it will give them 'little muscles."

get a good training partner. Peer pressure can be a great motivation.

I don't go to the gym, but I either cycle or run. I will get very irritable and restless if I don't exercise and find it releases an enormous amout of stress from my mind and I also sleep a lot better. Plus, there is nothing like the feeling I get from cycling. Ok .. that sounds obsessive.

My health and the value of self-respect I get from knowing that I'm taking care of myself. Other reasons would be just plain vanity.

This forum is about living well and looking good. You cannot do that without a solid fitness routine, it's that simple.

Do you do anything useful with your body, or is it just for looks?

Most of us stopped hunting for food and living in caves a couple of years ago. So we need to do other things to stay fit and, yes, look good. Seriousness and intensity may vary, but in general walks around the block and a couple of pushups in the living room are just not enough.

I'm going to second almost all of you (I don't know the political affiliation of my gym owner) and say that a lot of the factors already brought up motivates me. I like looking good and all the things that come with looking good and being in shape. I like feeling good and all the good things that come from that too.

I also look at the investment portion. I have lots of expensive slim fitting clothing, and I would rather not have to replace them. Also, if I were to think about all the money I'd spent on gym membership fees, lessons, training, gym apparel, supplements, etc ... oui!

Considering how much time I've spent on playing sports and staying fit through my entire life; and the resulting opportunity costs keep me in the game too. Why slack now? Why slack ever?

... and when all else fails and I'm drowning in work, I remember they're open late, people who have to work out late and I have stimulants.

My point is that the gym is not necessary for everyone. A lot of people go the gym to burn off excess calories they didn't need to consume in the first place. It's a binge/purge thing.

Probably a common reason among men in a forum like this.

On the other hand, it's likely that many people quickly give up on fitness routines due to minimal results that don't feel worth the effort.

I'm sorry, but with proper diet and a hard enough work out, you will see results. And those results will be worth it. The problem is that everyone thinks they will end up looking like an Adonis, instead of realizing plausible goals.

It seems as though most beginners have the wrong diet and the wrong nutrition. Many of them probably expect too much too soon, also.

I really don't see how. The basics are very, very easy. Granted, there are variation...I am still fine tuning my diet, but for the most part it's pretty much set.

It's a slippery slope, but a good one. You see some results, you feel better, you look better, the clothes hang better, you work harder. One key is to realize that there will always be setbacks. Available time, getting sick, getting hurt, but then you bounce back. It's a cool process once you get into it.

I have a trainer now who is really pushing me. Been in the gym for years but this is different. Hurts like hell but feels absolutely great.

If I do not sign in at the gym three times a week, I have a signed check for $100 that my trainer will mail to the RNC.
No excuses except death of self or immediate family.

damn, that's clever. make that a $1000 check and i'd never miss another day at the gym.
