What do you guys think about them? Is this their proper name? (I got it from the Thomas Pink website). I think they look really good for wearing a shirt casually without a tie. Here are two examples, one hickey and one thomas pink.

Side question, do you think the blue Pink shirt is worth it on sale at $79? Thanks.

i for one really love them just because they're distinctive, although i'm not sure i actually know how i'd pull one off. ralph lauren does a lot of them, too, and i see them for cheap at topman.com often.

They're commonly referred to as a banded collar, and if it was a proper formal shirt, one would be able to attach a separate collar to it. They're fine to wear casually (if they're made in a casual fabric), though you might get ire from the traditional AAAC crowd.

No - the fabric pattern is too formal to wear without an attached collar. Here's a light cotton one I just bought for myself to wear on hot summer days.

i love those shirts. yea, rl does do alot of them: qunicy model, bernard model, post-boy model, etc. Jcrew also does a nice one with a contrasting white collar to a blue shirt. Occasionally zegna does them. I'll have to check out pink. A nice banded collar in a beautiful linen would be the only shirt I stock on if I could find them more often. The key of course is not to button it up to the top.

Whodini has a great one by zara here (last page of waywt part 1):

are these the new "trend" for s/s?

Seems like many of the new shirts at Paul Smith this season are also with those granddad collars

^ Maybe it's new among some designers, but many mall brands like RL and J.Crew have been offering them to some extent for awhile. I'd say it's just part of the larger "work wear" influenced trend.

I ******* hate these things. They were in style in the early/mid 90s and are just horrible. Wait until a new generation of wankers starts wearing these with a suit because a tie is uncomfortable.

Yea, well, they were also in style in the 1890's so thier not quite a new trend phenomenon by any stretch of the imagination.

djs, I can't find that contrast collar on the pink site. Where did you get the image?

OK, when things go dreadfully wrong for you with this collar, just remember that I told you so. Please, for the love of God, do not be this guy (I know it is slightly different, but still).

here's the link.

Is this really a new trend? I mean, i guess that shouldn't really stop me from getting one, because I do really like them. I can't imagine anyone would ever wear these with a suit and tie though, so I don't see what the problem is.

Margiela has a cool blue oxford with white contrast collar that detaches to reveal this, not really my thing but looked nice. Also, would never wear outside of a casual setting.

Given the current conventions of dress, I wouldn't wear one of these collars with a suit, but I don't really understand the hate towards them. I think they can sometimes look better than a notmal collar, in a minimalistic sort of way.

Does anybody know if there's ever been a band collar that instead of buttoning at the neck curved down to where the second button normally is? Kind of like a v-neck, but with a band collar. It may be crazy, but I think that would look pretty good with a band about the size of a normal collar.
