Are they genuine 100% tortoise shell?

Labelking will have an expert opinion.

These would be great for a '70s look. I've asked him for more pictures. These look like they are cherry tortoise, which is a very dark shade--not the most valuable but still quite nice.

Can you provide me with a quick rundown of different kinds of tortoise shell and how expensive they'd probably be? Do these actually last or is it only good for 2-3 years? For some reason I really want one.

Th lighter the shell, the more expensive it is. The most expensive is known as blonde shell, which is a rather opaque looking clear material in a muted yellow. It comes from the tail-end of the turtle's shell and is rather scarce. Also, heavily mottled shell is desirable as well. For eyeframes in blonde, it would be about $10,000.

This is a nice visual of the different shades:

Tortoise-shell lasts for an extremely long time if cared for--two hundred years is no problem.

Sometimes it even lasts the tortoise that long before you get him to give it up.

Sea turtles don't live that long. Tortoise-shell is from the marine turtles: hawksbill and green turtle.

Then why is it called tortoise shell?

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but aren't tortoises generally land living terrapins?

Is it just one of those weird, "its wrong, but its always been this way" kind of deals?

That's one thing I've never been sure of.

Tortoises are land animals.

The name may have come from the French: l'ecaille de tortue.
