Twitch mostly equals watching people play video games (often with a little window in the corner so you can see their face). People can pay to subscribe to your channel or give you tips.

It is basically one of those CamGirl websites, except you get paid to finger a mouse instead of yourself.

It seems they also allow them to overlay obnoxious graphics and soundeffects over the footage when someone gives you a big tip. Girl's super excited because she thinks someone just tossed her more than $10k for playing an online card game...

The purple hair is gone, but she's playing Overwatch live right now: https://www.twitch.tv/legendarylea There are literally 1000+ people watching her play right now. She's not very good at it...but I think she's received $30 in donations in the 3 minutes I have been watching.

I hear she did a playboy shoot, but you'll have to google that yourself.

To be fair, twitch isn't only girls - it's also professional gamers who play on sponsored pro teams (they live in gamer houses with all expenses paid and play full time).

They get paid for streaming their practices/playing with subscribers. Spectators can also donate. They also get paid for tournament winnings (can be tens of thousands).

It's a whole industry.

I don't normally post serious stuff here (or brag in general), but today is probably the second best day of my life, after my wedding day.

I decided to change careers 10 years ago, before the recession, into a super competitive field. I've been struggling freelancing almost that whole time, working side jobs to make ends meet. Never gave up on the career though, even though many of my friends (including some way more talented than I am) have in that time.

Well today, I was offered a full time job with actual benefits, meaning come September, I no longer have to deal with my bottom-of-the-barrel health insurer, I can quit my mind numbingly tedious side job, and I no longer have to drive 20,000+ miles a year just to get work in my field. The fact that I can actually live like an adult rather than a perpetual grad student has not really settled in yet...

Oh, I didn't mean to imply it was only girls.

Mostly men actually--I meant more like "It is CamGirls for men".

Seems to pay off for this girl though. Her top 10 donations ever (including hte one from the scammer...which is only her 5th largest) add up to over $115k.

Abstract Title : Olfactory imprinting in Drosophila

Abstract : Title: Olfactory imprinting in Drosophila Abstract During a sensitive period, usually early in the life of many animal species, sensory experiences play an important role in shaping foraging patterns and habitat selection. Sensory cues signaling for safety and for food are quickly learned by young animals and encoded in their memories through modification of neurons in the sensory neural circuit. Imprinting of sensory cues is an important survival mechanism and a rudimentary form of learning. The imprinting of sensory cues can guide and shape an animal?s preferences and behavior. However, it is not well understood how early sensory experiences can contribute to the neural plasticity that influences behavior and thus has been the focus of the present study. Our results demonstrate that olfactory preference in adult Drosophila is markedly influenced by odor experiences during critical period?the first two days following eclosion. Exposure to apple cider vinegar during the critical period dramatically increases the flies? preference for that odor in the later stages of the animal?s life. We found that conditioned responses are abolished in Or83 mutant flies, suggesting that olfactory receptor neurons (ORNs) function is required for olfactory conditioning. We aim to isolate the neural substrate that mediates the acquisition and retrieval phase of conditioned response. We found that blocking Or42b ORN output during acquisition abolishes olfactory conditioning suggesting that Or42b ORN output is required in the acquisition phase. In addition, flies do not exhibit increased behavioral response towards apple cider vinegar in the absence of Or42b ORN output during testing. This indicates that Or42b ORN output is required for retrieval. In conclusion my work provides a causal link between sensory neural plasticity and behavioral modification.
and appears to have decided to do this instead of go to medical school.

I wanted to congratulate van veen for his amazing achievement and fire a joke at otc's cum laude but...

I can't get over how there is any fucking money in having people watch you play video games confused.gif

I've never used twitter but searching for a friend's I randomly found out my older brother and mom have twitter accounts that haven't been updated since 2013.

My older brother's account is the normal humorous quips about life, and my mom's are "honey.. are you on the twitter? Please call me!" "Honey, did you get my twitter yesterday? Please call"

In Korea, people get paid to stream themselves eating.

Which is equally odd.

I don't understand the whole cam girl thing either, why are you giving some random avarage looking chick money for stripping online. When there's literally millions of pictures and videos online already of the exact same thing?

Although, I have yet to see a medium by which people talk about their amateur sports games while live streaming them...and solicit real money. I understand how pro gaming can generate income and even audiences (although the games are typically too complicated to solicit a casual audience, unlike "get ball into some shape of goal" sports)...but it is a little funny that it has become so profitable to watch rank amateurs play

Startup idea? Put mics on rec-league basketball players and have them talk strategy outloud as they play?

Yeah, but sports isn't video games, nerds

I think it's some sort of sad attachment thing.

You can go to a site like MyFreeCams and watch most of the popular streams without paying a dime. Sure, you might have to rely on other viewers tipping the performers enough to get to certain threshholds ($X and I take off my top, etc.), but you don't ever have to pay.

But if you want the girl to be like "oooh thank you Find Finn, you're the best" or add you to her snapchat where she will look at your dictures and say "ooh that's a big one!"...then you've gotta fork over cash. I guess some people are into that...
