Found it.

Both places pay ~$100k and the signing bonus varies greatly, with $100k being an extreme.  Don't forget they get stock options too and typically a relocation bonus.  In six months, the guy's student loans should be almost paid off.  I did engineering in undergrad, without any parental assistance, and my total loans were like $20k.

The equity before going public was probably worth way more.

Fresh out of college grads do not get $100k signing bonuses.

At places like FB they can.

Edit: Tangentially, why do you think so many MBAs from top tier schools are moving to tech companies rather than consulting and iBanking?

Rent assistance for interns in high rent places is not uncommon. I knew people who interned at NYC banks pre-crash who received assistance on housing. Hard to find somewhere to live for 3 months (and come up with the cash if they want upfront payment or big deposits) in somewhere like Palo Alto.

And I mean...the guy parks at Google HQ, so he has 24 hour access to facilities. Browsed his blog a bit...sounds like instead of having a pee bottle, he just tries not to drink anything after 7:30 pm...

If had his loans paid off already, I'd assume he was an /r/personalfinance mod, but his income is going somewhere.

Again, entry level grads do not get $100k signing bonuses.

The highest ive ever seen was $50k and even then you have to have some pretty impressive chops and background to get that.

The norm is around $25k and a 125k base salary plus relocation assistance and some equity if you're lucky.

I think that price was for corporate housing which tends to be pre-furnished and more expensive than 1-year leases.

As for investing in rental property...you tell me if you want to pay 1.2 million for this place:

That's like 6k a month with 20% down...if you can get 2 people in each bedroom for 2k each, you'll pay back your down payment in 10 years!
And that's actually kind of low per sq ft for the area.

Or maybe you'd be happy with this charmer for a cool 900k:

According to his blog, it sounds like his plan is to pack up and do extensive travel in 4 years or something. Cross country the van to see america, leave it in boston, and see the rest of the world.

Really does sound like he is more /r/vandwellers than /r/personalfinance

and for what it is worth, he has only been doing this since like June or July...I sure hope he improves his interior design or gives it up.

If you say so.  The numbers Finn posted seem high to me, but with some Google-fu it indicates the numbers are real for some people with internships.

Hells yes I just now discovered that the classic Kinks records are all on Spotify now! Those have been impossible to find since forever (for some kind of business-related reasons that I don't remember). The Village Green Preservation Society is one of the greatest records of all times.

Click on the quote, there was a couple pages of discussion about the subject.
