But when someone says "the Beatles weren't as good as their contemporaries" I file him under "doesn't know what he's talking about". The Beatles set the standard for all of those contemporaries.

Really? Other bands were trying to recreate what they did? What did they do that so many other bands were trying to recreate besides straight up popularity?

I was going through some old stuff and found my older brother's old Pixies tapes. I wanted to play it but there isn't a tape player in the house. I got bummed out and remembered that my iPhone has all the pixies old albums on it anyway. Its gotten to the point where the music is so accessible and free that I forgot that I actually borrowed Pixies CDs then physically burned them onto my computer and uploaded them onto my old assed iPod circa 2003.

I'm happy that kids these days have instant/free access to all this music. I remember when i was a kid I did the Columbia 10tapes for a dollar scam to buy stuff I wanted. Or the 80's-90s where you would wait for 30min when a MTV VJ would say that your favorite band's video was coming up on the hour. Those were such facepalm.gif times.
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
I had 10 tapes sent to my friend's house with a fake name, then another 10sent to my house, then another 10 sent to my parents office/clinic. lol8[1].gif

my dad figured out my racket and promptly whipped the shit out my 11year old ass.

I certainly prefer the instant access we have now, but we've also lost some of the thrill of hunting down stuff that you'd heard about from knowledgeable friends or that you'd read about in some magazine. You'd spend your money not knowing for sure what you were getting, which was always an adventure.

I remember when I was little I'd wait by the radio hoping they'd play "Tusk" by Fleetwood Mac. Of course, that didn't come on too often on my rural Wisconsin radio station.

EDIT: I still remember when my friends and I finally got our hands on The Elder by KISS. That record (from 1981) was a huge flop and so it was impossible to find. I am sure I cherished that record more than I would if I'd had easy access to it.

I was burned badly by this after reading some glowing review of Love and Rockets in the Providence Journal. facepalm.gif

Not sure ? Are you implying that perspective is invalid in the discussion of the accuracy of an historical event?

I went to get my new car titled and registered today. After wading through all sorts of contradictory information about which documents I needed to bring with me, I was sure they were going to tell me I'd forgotten something. But miraculously, the transaction went very smoothly. Also, the lady who did the transaction was quite attractive, which is something I did not expect.
