Well, because the norm of reciprocity suggests that they should return some kind of compliment. Therefore, by complimenting them I am putting them in a position where they have to invent a lie, since I don't have any qualities that merit compliments. shog[1].gif
(I should add that I don't think that all the time. But it has occurred to me more than once.)

I have this exact same feeling. Once I complimented this girl's scarf and she thanked me and I just stared at her and said, "don't you have something to say to me also?" My friend laughed pretty hard. I thought it was funny.

For a certain value of nice. I often like to wear fragrances that are a bit avant garde, and those don't really smell "nice" in a conventional sense.

Often I get negative compliments. Like this for example:

Me: You look beautiful today.
Partner: Umm...and I really like how you haven't committed a felony... ...That I know of.

I get my fair share of negative compliments (is that an oxymoron?) They say less about me than they do the person giving them, however sometimes I can learn something from them and that makes me happy.

By negative compliments, I just mean when someone praises you for not having a certain quality that's bad. I was just kidding about getting negative compliments; that doesn't really happen. But sometimes when I do get actual compliments about good qualities that I'm not sure I actually possess, I fear that people are just giving them because propriety requires it.

I was just now thinking of a new category of compliments, which would be so vague as to be almost meaningless. But if they were said in a good tone of voice, they'd come off as compliments.
For example, "You've just got a certain way about you." Or "You have a manner that is quite remarkable indeed."

Well I usually smell like soap and/or Bay Rum so I guess nice is relative.

I was recently contacted by a recruiter about a job in one of my favorite cities. I'm not sure what, if anything, will come of it, given the job would represent a pretty significant shift in my career (though it's a shift I've considered in the past), and I'm still waiting to see if their hiring range will be where I'm looking. Still, it's nice to have someone express interest, especially given this was basically a cold call by the recruiter.

I always thought people that said that were stupid, or romanticizing the past. Love at first sight at age 35. I know it will be a long, sometimes tough, road ahead. I know I will miss the days of hunting, of lone wolfing, of a life free of the often baffling feminine perspective. I already do sometimes. But I also know ths is the best decision of my life. And I'm truly happy.
Congrats to those who have already found theirs, and best of luck to those who haven't!

Congrats, R.

I recall getting texts from you after your first date, and you were certain about her then, so it's fantastic to see it all happen. She's an awesome woman, and I wish you guys nothing but the best.

First day of work went pretty well. Not a surprise since I'd been working there as an intern for a while, but still.

And found out today that I was moved to a different team internally - from FMCG to Tech & Services. The nerd in me is very happy with this.

Huge congrats to FLMM, best news of the weekend by far.

But I have some solid things.

Got a lot done around our new house and a little around our old this weekend, with a plan to finally be rid of that old albatross. Biggest accomplishment was clearing out our new garage/studio outbuilding, which was just a dirty, colossal mess. It is now at least, swept clean and well-organized. We created all kinds of room for storage and other projects that have been waiting.

Some very good news was intimated to me at work today. Too early to really make any kind of pronouncements but hopefully something really good coming soon.

Lastly, and perhaps most satisfyingly: I am putting a whipping on MrG's southern hick fantasy football league; after this week I shall ascend to first place.

Lots of good career-related news in this thread lately (or at least intimations thereof). Congratulations to all of you! (Or "congrads," as I think MrG prefers.)

My happy story isn't as good as those, but it could be worse, I guess. I cut my hair shorter than I intended to, but that means I can drive with the window open and not worry about it getting messed up.

My girlfriend asked to borrow $350 about 4 months ago. I gave it to her. I figured she just meant "can I HAVE $350", anyway she handed it back to me yesterday. You're damn right I took it too.

How do you usually wear your hair?
