NIce shots man. Wow you did one of the more strenuous hikes right off the bat. The next local hike(s) you should check out is Sterling Forrest. Its up by the IBM campus and NYU School of Medicine Environmental Medicine Campus.
Its actually about the same distance away from NYC as Bear Mountain but 10miles west.
They have a nice visitors center with a large 3D Map where you just press the button of which trail (length/difficulty/views) you want to take and it lights up on the 3D map. The people that work there will provide you with a free quick map/guide/printout for specific trails if you ask. We ended up buying the trail guide map anyway because we ended up lost on our 2nd hike there a while back.
one of the trails leads up to a peak with a 60ft fire tower. You can climb up it and feel the whole thing swaying in the heavy winds
watch out though because the trails can be muddy. enough to sometimes sink a whole shoe/boot in.
with a fresh snow the trails can be awesome.Edited by LawrenceMD - 2/18/12 at 2:58pm
