so my uncle gave my dad a 40k Steinway & Sons grand piano for his birthday one year (what the hell?? it takes up our ENTIRE living room) and he hasnt used it for over a year so he wants to sell it. hes tried a few places but no luck.

does anyone have experience with pianos, know where i could sell it, know who i could sell it to or want it themselves?

thank you

local music schools, or colleges. try craigslist, newspapers, and piano stores... otherwise, a reputable auction house with a reserve.

What a strange gift.

Try local piano teachers and piano tuners; they may know people who are looking. Also, a reputable piano tuner may be able to give you a more accurate idea of what it's actually worth, given its condition.

no.. just put it on consignment with a piano boutique. Expect it to take 6 months to 3 years to sell and pay probably 15% commission.

the only people I know who have bought serious pianos (25K+) bought pre-owned from a piano store, but they bought from a specialty store in germany. I am guessing that there must be similar stores in the big cities in the US.

exactly.

3 years ago I lived high up in an apartment building, and the man above me owned such a Fazioli (with the low F) as well as a Steinway full concert grand.

He had both a Fazioli and a Steinway D? That must have been one large apartment.
