Actually being a Trudeau favors you, lots of good equipment available up there.

This is the place to go:

In your situation, definitely an amp with a good phono stage. I wouldn't worry about it being a tube amp considering vinyl is a warm source.

This right here is gold:

For 500 its a buy.

And this... Sugden, superb.

Don't know if the moon has phono stage.

Wow- I didn't know that site existed.

I just looked- the turntable is a Sony PS-LX5 and it'll definitely need a new cartridge. I'm hoping to be able to plug something like an iPhone/Chrome Audio into the system as well- hence the 'want' of a tube amp or pre-amp.

I would get phono stage as a separate component (box). Do not buy amps with built-in phono. These type of phono stages are overwhelmingly bad. This is not just my personal experience, but pretty much a consensus among audio folks.
So my 2 cents, if you want your vinyl to shine get a decent (resolving) phono stage. There are plenty of Chinese electronics that are well made and reliable. Research them and you can get a good deal. If you like warm sound you can still go with transistor audio just look for Class A amps. One that is available in CAN is Music Hall Audio: http://www.echohifi.com/details/4672/Music-Hall_Mambo
I use MH products from this era and they are build like nothing else. Plus you can service them in US/CAN
The reason I mention MH is that they are very affordable on a used market but still deliver well above average.
Solid state Phono stages are also not bad look for good one, made with opamps. Lamps will be a pain in the ass, imho.

That's an overstatement. Maybe a Pioneer amp's phono sucks, but a well regarded Linn certainly does not.

Also, he has a really limited budget. Buying a separate phono stage means less money for the overall setup.
