Got my issue of Stereophile in the mail today and this was on the cover:

That's a stunning amp. Anyone ever heard one of these?

Yes. At length.

At shows.

How did it sound?

Under show conditions, like a Krell.

I think it sounds better than a Krell. Much better on the mids and highs.

But that is not really an endorsement isn't it. I think Krell is awfull on mids ,highs and only does punchy bass for Home theater crowd.

P.S. Although my cat used to love Krell ,so horses for courses.

I just picked up a pair of Sennheiser HD280's and I really don't find them that comfy compared to my old Audio Technica A500's. Anyone have a recommendation for a phone similar to the AT's in comfort? Use will be music and movies/tv.

selling the 280's btw, if you know anyone who wants a basically brand new pair at a discounted price.

I have a pair of HD 595's and wear them all day when working from home. They sound great too. Note they have an open design so people around you can hear them. You might annoy folks around you in some environments.

You can get a pair for less than $200.

Plenty of takers on d'bay for those. Or Audiogon, you'll get a better price there.

Got bit by the audio bug again, picked up a Fiio E10 DAC/Headphone amp for $60 on a whim to replace my sound card which is not compatible with Windows 8. Sounds great for the price. Amazing stuff nowadays.

I've heard an older Krell sound pretty darned good when paired appropriately. I wasn't impressed with the D'Agostinos either - they sounded powerful by lifeless. However, they were driving Wilson's Sashas and cabled with Nordost Odin, so who knows whether it was the amps or the overall system. It's difficult to judge the character of a single component unless you're already very familiar with all the other ones in the system (and how the rest play together).

I am looking for a basic serviceable turntable; my dad's audiophile friend came up with these choices from a hobbyist he knows, just wondering if anybody knows anything about them or has any thoughts:

1. Kenwood KD-3070 - Near Mint Condition - Asking $180
2. Sony PS-X4 - Near Mint Condition - Asking $150
3. Technics SL-5200 - Scratches and hinge repaired - Asking $100

All are functionally 100% with cartridges & needles that should last a long time according to the friend.

Longtime music freak, not trying to get into audio as a hobby, just want to finally get a solid system that will sound great, plus add ability to play vinyl. Live in an ny apartment so lower volume use. Considering just getting a peachtree inova, their d4 speakers, and some type of turntable (would love a recommendation). But part of me wants something all tube for warmth and nostalgia, particularly bc I don't need anything very loud in my apartment and so I am curious about SETs and what not, although I get the impression venturing into those might be a very poor idea given my goal (get something great that works in place and don't think about it thereafter). Any advice? Turntable recs?

Apartment stereo sucks. You just can't use it. Forget deep bass.

You're probably ok with a set of satellites, a decent amp setup like a Linn and a Rega turntable.

Tons of sub $1000 integrated amps out there. I'm not into satellites so I'll defer to someone else.

If you want tubes (dunno what your budget it), this is a superb sounding amp:

Good value here:

And this integrated amp is a monster:
