If I want a turntable--what should I get as a sort of entry/budget model? Don't want to spend much money (and probably need more like guidelines for what to look for in used options) but I want the ability to listen to some records.
I don't have the *most* stable floors in my apartment so it should be able to handle a little shaking on occasion (whatever one my parents have seems to do ok in the same situation but I have seen other ones that skip with the slightest wiggle). Will feed into my generic pioneer receiver. Don't think the one I upgraded to last year has a phono-input anymore so I guess I will need a preamp as well.
On a related note, I might be interested in buying two--the girl I am seeing had expressed interest in buying a record player. She doesn't really have a stereo setup already. Short of thrifting up a vintage marantz receiver and some speakers, is there anything out there like a groovy mono speaker and amp combo with a phono input that could sit next to the turntable and not take up a ton of space?

I always recommend Rega for entry level. Great engineering and legacy.

Get a Target Turntable Wall Mount shelf (into the studs!!!) or try this. Worked really well, even with a finicky Well-Tempered turntable. Rock solid.

Had a Planet 2000 CD player years ago. What a tank.

We were just talking about that bit of kit. Pretty good, and miles better than the singular Roy Gandy dud, the original Planet. It got raves everywhere. Ken Kessler and I were the only ones to trash it in the press, and took a lot of heat for it. But, Roy got going on his Mk.II pretty damned sharpish and produced the 2000. It was much better. And so was my review smile.gif The Jupiter was even better. He figured he better get some digital in the box rather than squeezing a turntable in there! smile.gif

Thats a monster, but 1600 is rich.

I'd buy it for 1200.

Anthony, good to see you back. Did you get the SFSO SACD of Harmonielehre? It's quite fantastic.

Picked up an Audiolab 8000DAX the other day.

Had an 8000DAC years ago and loved it, regretted selling it immediately. These never come up for sale, so one came up recently on CList and I scooped it up for my bedroom system.

For anyone that wants a fantastic sounding DAC for peanuts comparatively, suss one out.

I guess, more importantly, is the whole idler drive renaissance BS or worthwhile?

I bit of BS imho but it does seem to work on the VPI Scoutmaster. Still the best tables I have heard are all belt driven.

Got my first set of Sonus Faber's this week. The Concerto Domus. Such build quality. Think I am going to sell one of my sets of Linn Keilidhs, dont have the need to start a new system at the moment. Have a set of KEF 103.3's as well. Not sure which to part with.
