Some recent acquisitions. All the Harrisons came from Andrew Rogers. From left to right:

Harrisons Moonbeam navy blue herringbone - #36511 - 320 grams

Harrisons Moonbeam brown with navy blue overcheck - #36510 - 320 grams

Harrisons Frontier blue glen plaid - #65047 - 300 grams

Fox Flannel medium gray glen plaid - #FS 625 - 300 grams worsted flannel that really looks like a woolen. I love how there is some red running along the perimiter of some of the boxes.

Random question: is it fair to say that, generally speaking, cloth will make up lighter in colour as a whole garment than as a swatch? I was surprised to receive a coat today that looks several shades lighter than I remember the swatch to be - is it a normal optical illusion phenomenon?

Maybe it was the lighting?

This happened to me with my gun club shetland. It was a first for me, though. Usually, I get what I think I am getting.

Maybe partially but I don't think that it's the main reason. I think it's the way some cloths capture light and reflects it differently as a large piece than as a small square.

It seems to me that it's less of an issue with worsteds than with woolens and more textured cloths, but I may be getting too deep into conjectures and assumptions here based on a very small sample.

It was a lighter blue than navy - Moonbeam 38503. It ended up being much lighter than I thought.

Some possibilities:

1. normal variation in dye
2. if sponging was performed, it may have caused some dye loss
3. lighting in which you viewed the swatch (natural vs. artificial, etc)

I think blue cloths show a bigger difference depending on the light than any other color. If you have the sample, hold it up to the made up garment and you will see that it is exactly the same. Or not.

No I know that it's exactly the same cloth and that's the point I'm raising. I think there's an optical phenomenon sometimes in how one perceives colors (and it's different for different colors) depending on the size of the colored area. It's more of an optical illusion/trick than anything that relates to the actual piece of cloth. Just like discs or squares of different colors may appear of different sizes even though they're exactly the same size.

Consider also the background you're holding it up against - a light background will make a dark cloth look darker, and a dark background will make a light cloth look lighter.
