Recommended tailors in Portland, OR?

I'm not sure how many SF members reside here in Portland, but I am constantly in the market for a decent tailor and haven't had much luck thus far. Usually I'm just getting a shirt slimmed down and just take it somewhere cheap (usually DZ), but I'd really like to find somewhere a bit more qualified for major alterations.

My major dilemma right now is the TaT jacket that's been sitting in my closet for two months--before ordering I had measurements taken at Custom Clothiers and Tailors by Kash Ross, who is reputedly one of the city's best and oldest, but nonetheless the back shoulder measurement ended up about an inch too big and will need to be taken in before the jacket is really wearable. Given that he caused the issue to begin with, I'm not really that anxious to return to him, but have no idea what my options are.

So, can anyone here recommend anything? I was thinking of looking into Duchess Clothier, as I imagine they'd be a little more open minded than some of the stauncher places in town (Kash told me that a jacket that short would be "for women"), but would like to know what I'm getting into.

Anyone?

Mario's recommended Gien's Tailor at 1115 SW Alder St. Apparently it's where they send overflow work when their in-house tailor is busy. I have no experience with Gien's myself.

There's a place called "Well Suited" on NE 24th that I've used for all of my alterations. I've taken literally all of my stuff to that place, so I have no basis for comparison, but I've been satisfied with the work they do.

I would not use Gien's tailors. They are on par with DZ but charge a lot more. DZ is the only place we ever use.

Thanks for the replies, everyone.

blake - I've been generally satisfied with DZ, but their attention to detail is always a bit lacking (uneven stitching, among other things), would you trust them with re-cutting a suit jacket? I need the shoulders taken in, so they need to be pretty precise/skilled.

progressiveminded - What kind of work have you had done at Well Suited? Would you consider them professional enough to alter a suit jacket?

I'll make some calls on Monday and post the responses I get, in case anyone else is interested in local rates/ranges of service.

I've only had simple stuff done at Well Suited. I've had a couple of shirts hemmed, a couple taken in, and a pair of jeans tapered. I've been satisfied with the work, but to be fair, I haven't had anything all that complex that needed to have work done on it.

I would not be willing to trust them with something that needs to be very precise. They are cheap, fast and amazing with denim but I do not know about suiting.

I've had DZ hem pants, slim up shirts, and slim up and raise the hem of a jacket. They've got a good eye for what can be done w/out unbalancing a garment, have good attention to detail, and are super-nice and dirt cheap.

What's DZ's turnover time? I've only got a few days in Portland, but I need to have some work done on a few items, and I wouldn't mind trying someplace else.

she is amazingly quick with denim. other stuff however can take a long, long time. I would not risk it being done in a couple of days. Jeans she does overnight.

Does DZ do chain stitching?
nobody in portland does chain stitching. Jay in seattle or Kiya in SF are the closest. We are currently hunting for a machine so we can do it here for you.......

Just to chime in, I've had great luck w/ DZ for simple shirt and pant work, but I did have a disappointing experience w/ one job. I won't take them anything complicated in the future.

In speaking w/ Jordan at Winn Perry I learned that Duchess will do alterations, but only when they are not in the busy season for custom work, which tends to be later spring/summer due to weddings (big chunk of their biz I gather). Best to call and see what they say, as I have not spoken with them directly.

I actually had such a terrible experience at duchess that I would never use them again.
