I think there is still variation in that group, but perhaps not as wide as the general population. By trained, I'm thinking of people who are trained to find certain artifacts like the AAC and MPEG listening groups or people who have calibrated qualitative listening skills a la David Moulton's system.

Trained listeners need to be calibrated as accurately as any piece of test equipment. Wine tasters do this all the time as part of their training.

Blind is important, but you also need to get rid of other biases, such as level differences. They can vary quite a bit if you're comparing different recording media.

There is even as ISO spec for the training of wine tasters.

QFT but we always level match so that isn't it. We also keep the rest of the playback chain exactly the same.

How was the level matching done?

Oh, it's not so bad -- it's not as if you actually have to follow it. I needed to conduct a tasting at my job and being engineers we looked at the spec. It brought up some points we would otherwise have missed.

Andre, which claim are you skeptical about? Is it the claim that the LP outperforms the CD? Or the claim that SACD outperforms the CD?

Wine and engineering? You sound like you have the coolest job in the world!

You know, I'm not sure anymore, which is how these discussions tend to end up. LP is easily distinguishable from CD, so that's not an issue. SACD and CD is more contentious (if you ignore certain amplifiers' explosive tendencies when SACD is played through them). I was questioning AF's claim that most mastering engineers agree with him. That seems to be a very broad claim.

As for the former -- I didn't say wine! You wouldn't want to know! For the latter, I think I may have the best job for me in engineering that's out there that doesn't involve creating anything I'm personally vested in.

This test has been widely debunked but perhaps it says something more about Monster Cable wires.
