Why do audiophiles elevate their cables?

Here's a good explanation why I get out the styrofoam cups:

I take your elevators and raise you my activator

And for the ultimate in clean power, why not this?

Hahaha my thoughts exactly.

There was a recent article in the WSJ about blind tests on clean power, $2000 cables, etc. at a recent audiophile convention. I don' think one of them had a statistically significant leaning in the direction of the audiophile gear. Most people were able to tell the difference between audio from a high-quality MP3 from an Ipod and a CD. But interestingly, not between a .wav from an Ipod and a CD.

Just because it's written doesn't mean it's true, relevant, or non-trivial.

The Shunyata link just broke my bogosity meter. Someone owes me a new one.

I have no idea what a bogosity meter is, but if you guys get into another one of those debates, mine will be going off like a motherfucker.

The more bogus a claim is, the more bogons it emits. The meter measures the flow of bogons.

WTF does anyone need to seek approval from a clothing forum for elevating their cables anyway? Especially if they're screwing it up by using non-conductive foam cups in the first place that doesn't even unify their static field and stuff.

If you want to make a lot of money you either deal blow or sell audiophile equipment. The difference? While both products aren't worth the money, the coke dealer isn't full of shit.

I love how circular it is -- you raise the cables to 'manage vibration' and to 'manage static fields' but when you do that, you create a 'static differential field' because you've raised the cables! So what do you do!? Just leave the cables on the ground so there's no charge differential!? No way! Make the blocks you've raised the cables off the ground with conductive, so it's like the cables are on the floor again! Wait, no, WTF, that's stupid! No one will fall for that! No, of course they will, just say the foam is expensive!

AF, whether you know it or not, I've never done AF-bashing, so I'm not jumping on a common bandwagon, but this is really, really stupid.

WAV and CD bit-for-bit the same thing, I don't see how this is unexpected.

Perhaps I should have been more specific: the WAV was from an Ipod (often derided by audiophiles for it's crappy headphone amp), while the CD from an mid-tier audiophile quality CD player.

I thought iPods don't play wavs, they play the Apple format (aac?), which is noticeably inferior...

Whenever I read certain posters' posts on fashion or audio, two sayings come to mind:

A little knowledge is a dangerous thing.

"In America, we're taught to check a fact before it becomes a fact." -- Philip Baker Hall, The Talented Mr Rjpley.

http://online.wsj.com/public/article..._20080214.html iPods play several file formats, though notably not Windows Media Audio and I don't believe FLAC either. They do play MP3s, Wavs, AACs, AAIFs, and Apple Lossless, which is what I record in.
