Please Recommend Me A P&S/Pocket Camera!

Thread Starter
Hello,

I'm looking for purchase a new point-and-shoot/pocket camera. My current camera is the Casio EX-750. I've taken a liking to the pictures Nantucket Red takes (especially those in the Car thread, see samples here). IMO, they are breathtakingly gorgeous and I'd like a camera capable of taking the same. Specifically, I'd like a camera that produces deep colors and (as blasphemous as this may sound to advanced photographers), makes people/objects look good.

Nantucket Red uses the Leica C-Lux 2. While my budget could technically stretch that far, if there are more affordable options, they would be of course be preferred.

Which P&S would you recommend for me?

Thanks!

the black and white that nantucket took were with a film camera

+1 on the Canons. They are very responsive and produce nice pictures. When I used a friend's Casio Exlim last summer, I thought it was really sluggish.

i would steer clear from sony, and casio and so forth. Canon makes a great P&S as well as Nikon. check dealnews.com you might see one of the canon's listed above for a super cheap price. also if you are looking for instant reviews, read the user comments from www.dpreview.com

I'm slightly partial to Nikon because that is what I use for all my DSLR equipment but the Canon point and shoots I've used have all been very nice.

I've recently bought a Samsung NV10, great camera at a great price.
For high end point and shoot I'd go with Ricoh or Panasonic

Another Canon user here. I always favour the AA battery models as it is so easy to grab a pack of alkalines in an emergency. I use the A570IS (upgraded from an A70).

I've used Canons, Sonys, Casios, Fujis, and Nikons. Thought my Nikon 3.2MP from a few years back was a total piece of crap. Faulty shutter that would continually break during/after warranty. Maybe it was just bad luck. The camera I have now is the Casio z1000. I have a few nitpicks with it but it's easily one of the best p&s' I've owned. I like the technology on the new Canons now (and would probably go that route today) but for customability and performance my Casio has been great. Battery life is really spectacular, great settings in manual, filters, etc. etc.

I have a Canon SD870 IS and I've found it quite capable. Took it on my ice climbing trip recently and the pictures came out great. Just have to make sure you use the right scene selection else they might come out weird (like with any P&S)

Should I buy the Canon SD870 IS or the Canon SD950 IS?

870 has a wider angle zoom, and 950 has more pixels and a longer telephoto range. In everyday use, I find the wider angle will more useful, and I doubt the extra pixels will ever be useful. I have the 870's predecessor, the 800.

I say Canon SD1000, SD850/870is, or a Ricoh Caplio R7 (hot compact super zoom with wide angle). The Ricoh is a bit more exotic but a very very nice P/S pocket cam.

Ricoh GR Digital II

Very high quality lens. RAW Image quality.
No zoom lens, but terrific picture quality, and very user friendly features and ergonomics.

*Drools* those are beautiful, and with available clip on lenses a very practical camera. Though, if you want a built in zoom lens and a lot of the same options the GX100 Ricoh is a good choice.
