I can't post much anymore

Thread Starter
They moved my desk at work this past week to an extremely visible place in the office. It's a high traffic area and I'm working in conjunction with a team and our desks are in a quad formation (our backs to each other). All of my superiors can see what I have on my computer, so no more internet surfing. Plus, they know the exact time I arrive in the morning, time taken for lunch, and time leaving. I know that alot of you guys post from work. How does it work for you?

hey mike C - missed your 1000th post, congrats.  DA MOON RULEZ #1. i post from work. i guess "they" can see me. i should probably stop. but i can't. in my office people are on the web a lot all day anyway, doing research, so i tell myself that it's not that conspicuous. but i'm a productive and efficient worker, so at least i get stuff done. i multitask. the web is a terrible place that sucks me in and doesn't let go. i'm sure there are many others out there who feel they have a kind of addiction like i do. hey at least i'm not doing crack at my office desk. /andrew

Speaking of... I have a huge exam tomorrow morning, in the worst class ever. What am I doing? I have my textbook and notes on my lap, but my mind is on the styleforum. J, I hope you know you've contributed to my deliquency by creating this site. And I love it. Thanks.

Muahahaha.. believe me, I did the same when I was in school. Oh, how nice it is to say that. Did I mention I'm not in school anymore? I graduated. Yeeeeeah. If I didn't have a distraction in front of me, I had to create one. And you are enjoying the fruits of that tendency.

I post from work but I have a big cubicle and my boss is never looking over my shoulder... so I'm safe as far as I know.

I've got the same problem as well. I'm in a corner cubicle, where everybody walking by can see what I'm up to. What I've done is tilt the computer screen so that it partly blocked. Then, I move my head so that it covers the other part. However, all this won't help if your company checks your computer. They can easily find what you've been doing.

there is an important thing to remember while you are goldbricking: never look like you're goldbricking. george costanza is your model in this regard. his trick was always to look pissed off and stressed out. he took naps under his desk, if i remember correctly. note to spying employer: this post was purely for entertainment purposes - i do not condone nor have i ever practiced such subterfuge. /andrew

Keep in mind that "they" don't have to physically "see" your Internet activity to monitor your web surfing. We block undesired / dangerous traffic (in and out, web and email) and can report web activity by user or PC down to the second. Reports include time / date, elapsed time, site name, site category, etc... HR and Dept Mgr's receive the report monthly. Several productive, efficient associates have been surprised in the last few months when confronted with these reports. It's interesting to see / hear different reactions. Uber-time-management freaks see that 30 minutes a day translates to 10 hours in a four week month... so over a day's worth of productivity. One hour a day in a five week month is three days of lost work time. On the flip side, I'd be more comfortable if the site content was analyzed as much as the reported time. Then again, I don't think there's a report that can measure time spent on email... but we are about to monitor IM's.
