Does anybody know if there are eye glass prescriptions that will help with eye problems from overusage of computers and strain due to too much reading?

no, but i've heard that if you put the screen further away from you it helps. You could also get a really big monitor depending on how big your desk is. I generally print things which require me to read for an extended period of time. it's much more enjoyable.

I don't know about prescriptions or anything, here are some things you might want to try:

* Change the font dpi on your system so they're slightly larger.
* Change the screen refresh rate of your monitor. Lower rates (like 60 Hz) on CRTs give me headaches, but not so much on LCDs.
* Try Cleartype if you're on Windows: http://www.microsoft.com/typography/...ner/Step1.aspx

Take breaks. Thats the absolutely best thing you can do to prevent various repetitive strain injuries to everything from the hands to the eyes to the back.

It doesn't even have to be a long break, just like a walk to the water cooler or a short jaunt around the cubical farm. Or even just standing up and stretching while focusing on an object further away.

I do something like that while working in the dark room (kills your eyes and legs), over the potters wheel (kills the ever loving hell out of your back), and computer.

Ditto on the taking breaks advice.

I belive last time I was at the eye doctor he mentioned special glasses made for heavy computer users to reduce eye strain. I'd talk to a professional...

I do think that laptops make it worse...and with my contacts I can barely work for 5 min before I have difficulty focusing.

This is all good stuff, in my experience also anti-glare coating on your glasses can help reduce eye strain.

Within the past five or so years I've started using reading glasses for day-to-day stuff like reading the paper and working at the computer.

A couple of years ago, I also found some computer reading glasses (at Sam's Club I believe). They are slightly tinted (anti-glare coating?) and actually do seem to reduce the strain caused by spending all day working on the computer. I'd look and see if you can't find something like these.

I think extended computer use is what killed my eyes in the first place. I used to have 20/20 vision; nowadays it's more like 20/250. I can't see anything without my glasses.

I went to college during the emergence of the internet age (do everything on computers), and i have worked at an internet company for the last 8 years (8 hrs a day of looking at a 19" monitor) and i still have 20/20 vision. I think its basically genetics and your age
