Box Wine - oh yeah

Anyone try some of these new premium box wines? They are lined in a collapsing, air-free plastic bag so they can go for about 4 weeks before going bad, supposedly. I saw Black Box wine at more than one place, costs about $20 for 3L, aka 4 bottles. So $5 a bottle - Is it any good? Any other brands I can expect to find at northern california groceries?

I'd like to commend you on the balls that it takes to ask for box wine recommendations More wine is sold in boxes in the US than anywhere else (cue smug, pompous euro member response ) so a lot more people are drinking it than admit to it. Honestly though, last time I had box wine was about 7 years ago and it tasted like my feet. I don't see any good wine producer putting his stuff in boxes, if only due to the stigma.

You'd be better off buying 4 bottles of decent $5 wine, which is definitely out there, particularly from South America, then a box, I think.

Boxed wine is what college girls buy to get drunk. It has opened many vaginas for me. Does premium wine really come in a box?

No, but men do.

Well, on the one hand I have heard that up to half of the wine sold in Australia is box wine. On the other hand, I always understood Aussies in general to be all about beer.

At any rate, for the OP, I've had the Black Box stuff. It's passable. It is better than the $3-4 bottles of random South American stuff you'd find at Trader Joe's (make of that what you will). Hardy's in a box is the same as Hardy's in a bottle, so if you consider Hardy's to be drinkable you should seek it out in boxes.

Wine in a box is actually the best way to store wine. The WSJ and Fine Cooking, among others, have reviewed box wine favorably. I think people who discount the wine based on its carrying vessel would rather be seen drinking the wine than actually enjoying drinking it. Off the top of my head, Block Wine is perfectly fine for a weeknight get-together with friends. If you're concerned about droppin' that box on the table, put the wine in a carafe or decanter and you'll be fine. Box wine, if you look for the right kinds, is a great way to provide guests with something that's quality and economical. It's also good for single people who want to have maybe a glass of wine a week and don't want to throw away half the bottle every time they have some. (studied viticulture and enology)

This reminds me of something I saw at the LQ last week. Pocket Shot. http://www.pocketshot.net/ Can't say I'm a big box wine fan.. unless I'm forced to host a bunch of assholes I don't care for. Love the thread tags.

Last time I had boxed wine was in college. Buddies and I would remove the bladder out of the box and hang it on a line in the house. We'd take turns slapping the bladder, opening the spout, and chugging as much as we could in a single sitting. Really, the only way to enjoy fine wine.

Yeah, "Slap the Bag" is a fairly common game in college. Personally, I prefer "Cockslap the Girl."

Pfft. You think that's milk in my Special K? I picked up a bottle of Red Cat for a lady friend tonight. Now THAT is some shitty wine.

When we were moving and in temporary housing I bought a box of Black Box Cabernet and a box of their Chardonnay based upon the results of a San Fran Chronicle tasting. For the price, taste and convenience they were more than acceptable.

Just to be clear, do we mean the box with the silver bag inside it, or the tetra-pak?

damn I was busy at work all day and look what happens?

Anyway, i was specifically referring to a slightly new breed of premium box wines. They are almost universally 3L across the board vs 5L or whatever those huge Franzia joints that we are used to.

The operate on the principle that it is far easier to keep wine fresh if there is no oxygen in contact with it (which is true), and also that it is much easier and cheaper to ship 4 bottles worth in a bag than in 4 glass bottles (also true).

Anyway, it looks like no one has tried any of these new breed boxes, so I am fully willing to let the comedy continue, cock slap and all.
