I don't have the IRs, but I believe the Brogue leather is just a lot more dense, and thus stiff, than the IR oil tanned leather and just takes longer to break-in. I assume they made it with a harder finish so that it looks more refined and can take a bit of a shine, at the expense of a much longer break-in.
They're both oil tanned but you're right about the density, my black brougues when I first saw the leather it looked almost like plastic. But I really never have problems breaking them in though, they were just really stiff. The leather on iron rangers are more pliable

Thanks.
If it's the black harness leather, I love that leather. Takes waterproofing conditioner really well, and is pretty durable so the patina on the leather is subtle

Damn its hard getting to know what size to order, love these boots though.

Anyone here downsized just using ur converse shoes as a scale? =)

Im reading straight from the boot "Mens '9', Wo's '11', UK '9', EUR 42.5, CM 27.5.

Emailed the redwing shop in amsterdam and they told me to downsize to a US 8.

Im talking about the Iron Ranger boot.

Anyone that can agree to that? Thanks =) /Tobias

Width is an issue for me.

For Converse I take a US13/UK12 to get enough width, but am fine with a US12/UK11 in Vans.

For RW Iron Rangers I can just get away with a US12/UK11 I can just get away with a US12/UK11 but they're a little snug in the toe-box

For RW Engineer Boots I had to go up to a US13/UK12, but with comfort-flex insoles to take up some of the volume, but give me enough width (a half size would have been perfect, but the company can't be bothered to produce half sizes at the larger end of the scale).

For RW Moc-toes one pair is fine in a US12/UK11 but the other is a bit snug (although both models supposedly use the same last...) .

For dress shoes I'm generally a UK11 or UK 11.5

It's a shame Red Wing don't do the boots in multiple widths and half-sizes across the size range - I guess it's a way of saving costs.

I find Iron Rangers to be slightly long and very narrow, so might depend on how wide/narrow your feet are...

Sounds like you need at least an 8.5 maybe a 9

can anyone help me with the color difference on the Bourbon vs Copper on the Blacksmiths? Cooper seems to have a rust/orange under color at most...Hoping it's not as orange in person. I remember seeing both in-person last year but couldn't tell the difference in hand.

I'm interested in how these age as well. I have the Chestnut Beckmans and they have turned into a nice burnt orange with use and abuse.

The Copper Rough And Tough looks almost tan in person, looks great with dark jeans

I don't know about the other color

I had the same question. Ordered both from Nordstrom (free returns!). Still confused a little. Copper seems to be a little more red. It seems to be how these get scuffed/dryed out to tell the real difference. Would be glad to hear from others as well.

I just ordered some 8181s...  I'm addicted to Red Wing boots.

Yes, Joe, copper rough and tough is a little more copper/orange/reddish and you can really tell lighter areas of where the leather creases practically immediately.  It's a great leather IMHO if you want a boot/shoe that looks a little broken in immediately.

I've recently bought a pair of the classic 875. Eventually.

Now I have a sizing problem.

The boots are very tight. Lengthwise it's barely ok, but the width (D) seems very tight. Especially on my right foot the outside of the little toe feels very cramped.

But I've heard that it is recommend to get them tight as they'll stretch.

Do people share that experience?

I got them in 10.

Like my iron rangers and the Beckman/GTs. The iron rangers are snug, but ok, in the Beckman I've got quite a bit of room.

I love the leather.
