Red Wing Boots - Your Opinion - Page 101

Just used some Christmas gift certificates from Amazon to buy some Heritage Moc Toe 8146 in 10.5D. I went TTS for the most part:

Rockport: 10.5D
Nike 10.5D
Skechers: 10.5D
Chucks: 10
Allen Edmonds: 10D

I measure 10E according to the local shoe store.

These look and feel great so far. The foot bed is really comfortable already. There's no heel slippage or discomfort around there, the ankles, or the toes. The only pain is around the top, but I think that's just because I haven't worn any 6" boots in several years.

I'm not sure I understand the big sizing down and hard break-in trend. I would rather them fit right from the start. I wear thin socks and tie them fairly loose for a few days when new (even though I like my shoes pretty tight) and then gradually start tying them tighter and wearing thicker socks as they break-in.

Thanks for the interior climate feedback on the beckmans. I guess really, the issue is wicking since let's face it, ventilation like you get from a pair of Asics just isn't in the cards for these boots.

I do wear wool socks and notice with heavily oiled tanned leathers that the wicking sucks. All things being equal, the vamp liner can also be a factor. Cotton vamps are bad. Leather vamps or totally unlined vamps (eg Clark's DB) are best because they wick like crazy.

I just checked out the Beckmans at a local RW store and noticed the vamp liner is leather. Iron Rangers are cotton.

The whole sizing down thing is because this thread is about RW and RW says their sizes are usually half to one size bigger fit than normal.

Wrong

I think it depends on the model than.

I wear 7.5 in my two red wings boots and 9 and 9.5 in every other sneaker/runner I own.

This does not address the length of the shoe. If the shoe is too long the arch and toe box area will not be in the right spot. This will ultimatley affect comfort and break in. The shape of the last can also affect fit. Not every last will fit all feet.

Yes, but Clarks DB fit, in width, like Red Wings.

But I agree - getting properly fitted is a good idea.

Okay, I need an assist

I got 2 pairs of Red Wing 9011s, one in size 8, one in 8.5

I wear 8.5E Allen Edmond Strands, and a lot of my sneakers are ~9

I haven't worn either outside yet, as obviously I intend to return one (or both, if i decide neither is a good fit)

I really like the look of them but:

- the 8s are perfect length, but feel narrow especially on that part of the foot right behind the pinky toe and a bit on the arch. Pinky toe is a tad cramped but  I can generally wiggle all my toes, and it fits right in the heel (wearing a mid weight wool sock)

- the 8.5s are more roomy overall but seem a bit long and have a bit more heel slip

do you think the 8s ought to stretch ought enough to fit better as they break in? i've only worn them at home, though for a long period of time, and they feel more comfortable after some time, but definitely are snug in width...

its gonna take some time for them to break it and stretch.you're gonna have to suffer for a while.

we actually wear the same size.but i took mine in 8.5 D and 9 D.i did try an 8 but it was an EE,so it was snug.even the 8.5D is just like yours,my pinky toe sometimes got cramped in between.

I went with the same size as my DBs (which is a half size down from my AE size) for my 9030s. Breaking in was a bit rough but they have molded perfectly. I've walked 10 miles in a day with them since. No issues with moisture either.

ordered a pair of 1907's.  the leather's amazing...but the moc toe "ring" or whatever it's called ...the leather got cut through and the plastic part's jutting out.  have people completely abandoned qc at any step of production and sales?  another pair being returned.  2 months now, and i'm still wearing my old boots.

first ll bean katahdins are defective, now red wing.  really?  too bad, as i got them for a good price, and of course now they're sold out til march and i can't even exchange them, only return.

does anyone know if there's a red wing dealer online that does price matches?
