Just thought I'd pass along an article from today's NYT on the meat-eating festival known in northern Jersey and NYC as a "beefsteak." Enjoy!

Not me, but I'd love to go to one. Apparently, what they used to do when this whole beefsteak thing started is that all the customers (majority of which is men) check their jackets in and in turn they recieve an apron with a number on it, acting as a tag number for their jacket in the end. Anyway, this helps them in 2 ways because 1. for their jackets 2. the experience was very messy All they'd serve was beer & beef and their 'tables' would be beer barrels and their seats would be beer crates and the beef & beer would just keep coming and coming and coming.

I'd hate to be the janitor that has to clean up those bathrooms afterwards.

Yes, I have been. More times than I'd like to admit Times article is quite accurate but doesnt quite put across the feeding frenzy that it becomes when the trays are served. Beefsteaks are popular as political Police and charity fundraisers. The Brownstone in Paterson also caters a "respectable" event. Baskinger's in Clifton, NJ serves the entree portion as a lunch over the counter, sold by the piece negating the festival atmosphere was surprised by mentioning a beefsteak out of the metro area, I got the same questioning stare as asking for Taylor ham. Just a regional thing.
