Why would anybody go to a 3-star in Italy?

Because I have not had particularly good dining experiences in Milan. Florence and Venice are a different issue.

Milan has good food if you know where to look. You need to ask the locals. IMO, Florence and Venice have very average food when compared to the best of Italy. Anyway, there are two 3 stars in and around Milan. One is dal Pescatore and the other is al Sorriso. Neither are, IIRC, actually inside the city.

Thank you.

Can you recommend any good restaurants please? (i.e. really good food, not necessarily Michelin starred then)

Had a fantastic meal at Cracco-Peck (sp?) a couple of years ago. very sleek, modern interior but I recall the food being relatively hearty. it had a seasonal truffles menu at the time -- very expensive but i thought well worth it. I think it is michelin rated, but i have no idea of its ranking.
