My dad has a few and loves them, I just can't get over the low seating position, but they are fun to ride around - a different experience for sure.

So that's what Recumbents are. The dude who sold me my current ride (a vintage Japanese bike, brand is Shogun with Tangaloy 100 frame, whatever that means - has served me very well BTW) started collecting bikes because he had wanted to build a Recumbent.

Look really comfy. Still old-man bikes though, those things.

vman, i can't click through on the link but i'm guessing it's a motobacane? i agree with the other poster that 8speed might be more work than it's worth. Surprisingly 9speed offers some great gear ratios and stood its ground for about a decade before they gave us 10speed. I've been riding Shimano Ultegra 9 for about 8 years and only recently has the rear deraileur given me any problems. In general the difference between 105/Ultegra/Dura-Ace will be some slight cosmetics and a bit of weight. You shouldn't be so worried about shaving off grams when you're on a tight budget.

i have a friend that bought a moto and loves it. from there i believe.

re buying online: yeah, unless you know your riding style and measurements really well it's probably too much of a crap shoot. too much can go wrong. Local ebay or message boards may allow you to test one in your town though before you bid.

re R700. Aren't those old old old? I only rode a Cannondale once and that was enough. I'm not a fan of aluminum unless you are a sprinter. I tend to ride distance and my junk would be numb long before i climbed out of the saddle after a double century. Aluminum can be a great buy but look hard for a carbon bike in good shape. Nowadays there are plenty of them laying around.

Completely unrelated as down here bikes are pretty expensive so I just went for a basic, but reliable steel frame with shimano components off our equiv of ebay. Anyway, I forgot how hard hills are, especially when getting back into it. I wasn't sweating, it just felt like my whole body was telling me to stop right away! I need to put some more miles in I think.

Other than the previously posted general caveats for novitiates, is there any particular reason why you so strongly recommend against a purchase from BikesDirect?
