I just bought some Marc by Marc Jacobs jeans off a forum member, but he doesn't know if they're raw denim. How do I tell?

Do they look distressed?

Many times pre-distressed denim will have simulated wear marks--presumably where the creases/folds are when wearing, areas that are lighter than others, and sometimes patch marks.

Jeans can be non-distressed and still not be raw, yes?

They are distressed if they look like they had a very bad day at work...

i am looking for a raw denim jean that fits similar to the Earnest Sewn Hutch 107 (i wear 29x34) or Nudie Bootcut Ola (i wear 30x34). i've had both of these and love the fit but both have been discontinued! any advice would be appreciated. thanks!

Such as...? Do you mean as in a pair of 7's, for example, being offered in a "dark wash?" That's debatable. It could still be considered "raw" simply because it hasn't been manhandled or altered with wear. Personally, that's the definition I use because it's rather non-discriminatory; otherwise, the definition would be a little flimsy. You could use "raw" in the usage of jeans that are unwashed and unsanforized and unwashed and sanforized, but what about jeans that are unsanforized and washed (like a pair of post-soak 501 STFs?) What would separate them from the dark wash 7's?

Perhaps people would be inclined to believe that "raw" simply means that the jeans have never been altered by chemicals; I won't name names but I know quite a few SF brands that label themselves as "raw denim" when really they're one-wash jeans that HAVE been treated chemically with a wool-lite dark.

So... back to square one and my original definition of jeans that are dark without signs of distress.

Nudie made the Bootcut Barry to replace the Ola with the only difference being the waist being a little bit higher. You should check with Farinelli's for the Barry or better yet, PM Mauro as he used to wear Olas all the time. He'd be the man to point you to a similar fit.

So I got a lightly used pair of New Standards, 27s. They've been worn about 15 times according to the original owner, show no wear. But the waist measures to 30" and it's a bit big (the seat and the rest of the jeans are perfect tho...). Like how they are now I'm going to have to wear a belt. Can I just hot soak the waist so it shrinks back an inch or so?

Nope.

How long are we talking about here, for the boobs to disappear?

It's just part of wearing stiff denim. Even washed denim does it to an extent.

looking to get my first pair of unwashed denim. I really dig the fit of the skulls that were posted a while back and the rockers robbies been posting are awesome too. I was also looking at flathead and pbj. Any recomendations for someone who doesnt want tightness in the crotch and fit kinda like the kmw's that fade somewhat quickly?
Does Somet denim fade relatively quickly? I don't need flathead-esque fades, but I'd be bummed if they were as tough to fade as, say, KMW's.

And if I should wear a 29 (or *maybe* even 28's) in NC's (my 30's are a bit loose for my liking), what size in Somet 008's should I get? According to the Context, the waist bands of 29 NC's and 28 008's are both 31", but I assume that Somets don't stretch as much as APC's and I also want to take into account that the Somets would obviously sit lower on the hips...
By reputation, Somets fade slowish and don't stretch all that much. A 29 woudn't hurt if you're worried the 28 may be too small, but don't let mine be the final word on it.

Also, warning: I gotta say I think those darts look wack after a few washes, although I may be in the minority.
Ah, thanks. I guess I'll just trek up to Madison and have the guys at Context help me out. Have you seen any post-wash photos that show the darts? I didn't realize that they were so prominently placed...
